This weekend I had a terrible scraping noise start from my right rear
caliper, sounded like metal on metal. I took the wheel off, peaked at it and
didn't see much and decided I would wait a day before I had the time to take
it apart. Last night I took the caliper off and low and behold the inboard
pad was completely worn away! The outside pad was fine. I checked the left
hand side and that was fine. Turns out that the lower guide pin for the
caliper was frozen and would compress but wouldn't release. It slowly wore
away the whole pad. I have about 42k on the car but have no idea when this
started. The other pads were all missing about 1/16th" of material. The
iboard side of the rotor had some big gouges in it and will be replaced
soon.
Great, it was 8:30 pm, I had no brakes, and I was reluctant to put it back
together as is. Luckily, a bud (DK, you know who you are, thanks) drove me
to AutoZone where I got the last set of pads they had. Of course I had
forgotten my wallet in my car ant the place was closing in 15 minutes and we
were 10 minutes away. We managed to come up with the $15 in loose change
from DL's car to pay for them.
Finally got back to my car and started to install the pads. Found out the
brake caliper installer that we had didn't work so we just gave up for the
night and played som NFL blitz. Today I should be able to get the right
tool, slap them in and see if I can wear out these AutoZone pads before I
get my new break pads and rotors.
