Unlike an engine, transmissions do not burn oil- generally, there's no place
for gearbox oil to go, except out on the ground. So no, it's not something
that's necessary to check on a regular basis. If you notice that the trans
oil is leaking, it's worth checking (and probably fixing the problem causing
the leak.) On my '84 GTI, one of the axle flange seals is leaking a little-
it's enough to cause some oily spots in the garage, but whenever I check it,
the oil flows out the drain hole.
Other listers have changed to Redline to smooth out shifting and/or reduce
grinding. I put Redline into the '84, and a trans seal promptly failed... I
know it's coincidence, but it's enough incentive not to change in the VR6. I
haven't really had any shifting problems with my car, so I've had no reason
to change.
