Anthony,

there is a drain plug (17 mm allen) which you can loosen and check to
see that you have enough tranny fluid. There is also another (17 mm
allen) below which is the tranny oil drain plug. I believe that the
tranny fluid is a one time change, thou I change my tranny fluid per
50,000 miles. (probably overkill) I believe that since there is no
possibility of the tranny oil being burnt up in the cylinders, you do
not have to check the tranny oil level as you do the engine oil.
Listers main reason for changing the stock tranny oil for the Redline
MT-90 is the smoothness you will notice in gear shifts, less grinding of
gears and synchros. Fellow listers, if any of the above statements are
incorrect please do not hesitate to correct me.

Hope this helps,

David Kim

Unlike an engine, transmissions do not burn oil- generally, there's no place
for gearbox oil to go, except out on the ground. So no, it's not something
that's necessary to check on a regular basis. If you notice that the trans
oil is leaking, it's worth checking (and probably fixing the problem causing
the leak.) On my '84 GTI, one of the axle flange seals is leaking a little-
it's enough to cause some oily spots in the garage, but whenever I check it,
the oil flows out the drain hole.
Other listers have changed to Redline to smooth out shifting and/or reduce
grinding. I put Redline into the '84, and a trans seal promptly failed... I
know it's coincidence, but it's enough incentive not to change in the VR6. I
haven't really had any shifting problems with my car, so I've had no reason
to change.
