When I had my Neuspeed shift kit put in, I too was a little distressed with the increased
shift effort.. but found that it loosened up considerably over the next 2-3k miles or so,
even with a small round shiftknob that wasn't adding much leverage. I also had MT90
put in at the same time the shifter was done.. that stuff rules!

Get the Air & Water shift kit. The shifter height is about 3/4 inches
lower than stock and you get a shorter & firmer throw in each shift.

I have the Air & Water short shift kit in my GTI and I love it. The shift
effort has increased about 30% above normal and the throws have been
reduced about 50% ( right on track with Air & Waters claim ). I would
recommend getting a heavier shift knob that is about 3/4 inch taller that
stock with an Agla boot. This should look real nice and help take some of
the effort out of the shift. If you haven't already, I would recommend
getting Redline MT-90 in your transaxle. My gears have yet to crash even
in rushed shifts with this fluid in.

I suggest the short-throw shifter manufactured and sold by Air & Water
Engineering (AWE) [215] 848-6010, contact Todd. I've had one in my 1997
Jetta GLX for approximately 4 months, the throws have been cut down about
50% and the feel is quite good, not at all notchy. Todd includes very
thorough installation directions, install time is approximately 3-4 hours
due to the removal of the exhaust and heat shields. If your mechanically
inclined, which most VW nuts are, install time should be a bit less.

Is this for a Mark III?

I got one from Bahn Brenner last year that I'm pretty happy with. It was an
easy 30 minute install just sitting in the driver's seat.

The Neuspeed is expensive, but there is no core to worry about sending back
(if that matters to you).

The diesel geek wasn't available when I got mine, at least that I'm aware
of. It looks pretty good and the side to side reduction kit looks
interesting. Anyone have this? Care to comment on it? It can be added to any
kit for only $30.
