I had EXACTLY the same problem, got worse after I had the clutch replaced.
Took it back to the dealer one evening and they said no problem, we'll put
the alignment tool on it and re-align the cables. A short while later they
came and told me the plastic part the cables bolt to at the tranny end had
disintegrated when the removed the bolt! They didn't have the part so they
lent me a base model Golf 1.4 till the next day (actually it was ok in
town). With the new part though the problem was completely cured :-)
Even if you don't have a broken part like I did, a re-alignment will
probably do the trick.

I actually have difficulty shifting into 5th! Consistently.
When shifting into 5th, I always make one attempt, then pull to me a bit,
then retry a bit to the right. Feels like the letter "N". Anyway, I
shouldn't complain, this is not a critical gear. Actually not a necessary
gear for any comp.
It just bothers me.
