I've been wondering for a while now if anybody ever
came up with a six speed tranny for the VR6. I drive
SF to Denver once or twice a year, which begs for
extended periods of high speed, but I get nervous when
the oil temp starts shooting up at high rpms. I've
seen a couple fifth gear conversion kits, but I don't
really want to sacrifice low speed pull just to have a
cruising gear. It seems like the VR6 has plenty of
pull left to accomadate one more shift. I know it
would probably be ridiculously expensive, but I'm
curious to know if anyone has ever seen one.

You betcha - made by Quaiffe no less - it's *only* $3200 for the
whole shebang not including
installation!! If I can remember correctly that may even be the
whole tranny!!

Also using my very taxed memory banks - the gearing can be
customized - however I don't think
sixth gear is longer/taller than 5th gear on the 02A tranny - I
*think* the quaiffe 6 speed is a racing tranny
that actually is a close ratio tranny that would reduce the drop
in rpms between shifts and actually
drop the top speed!! But I'm sure they could accommodate a tall
(actually wouldn't it be shorter??)
top gear for a few extra $$!!

So does a taller 5th gear get you more top speed or less - I'm
cornfused!!?? Oh well - the short
answer is YES, Quaiffe is one I know of!!

That was Nelson Barnes with a '95 GTi VR6 with big valve head, cams, intake,
6-speed, wildwood brakes, wheels, tires, and shit loads of other stuff.

Sadly, Nelson passed away this last May of natural causes. He was in his late
50s. Nelson will be missed by everyone in CVO.

Yes, Quaife does make a six speed conversion, with all new custom cut gears,
hence the price. PVW did an article on it, and it's currently in "Project
SixSpax." Apparently the sixth gear still has a lower top speed than the
stock fifth for acceleration, so it's probably not what you're looking for.
It's available through Autotech in San Juan Capistrano, CA. There is also
the Option 6 kit from VF Enterprises sold through Eurospec in Gilroy, CA,
which uses some of its own pieces along with many factory parts,(sorry, I'm
no engineer-call them for the info).

Check that, it's VL Enterprises for the Option 6.

Hi y'all. I'm a new-onlooker Passat VR6 guy, but I hope
you don't mind if I lurk.

URLs that I have found for 6 speed 02A transmissions are:

http://www.spiretech.com/~vw6spd/ (mentioned by others,
looks like 020 on the site, not sure about 02A)

http://www.quaife.co.uk/product/new.htm (also on autotech's
site. 6th speed gearing is 0.800 vs. 0.838 in 5th on my
car - not a huge RPM drop for long distance cruising)

http://www.zstarr.com/impex/trans.htm (I know nothing about
them)

Holler if you have any other ones.

Eurospec, out of Gilroy, imports the Gemini 6 speed kits and boxes. A kit
sells for ~$1500 for a basic add on, but requires full removal and
disassembly for install. A full Gemini box starts at ~$3500, add a lower
geared final drive (only *real* reason to do a 6 speed IMO) and a Quaife, and
you're knocking on $6k with labor.
VL Enterprises only makes an 020 6 speed add on kit.
Quaife now has a race and street 6 speed 02A kit available through Autotech.
Race is full dog ring non synchromesh. Street is ~$3500.

I have a Gemini 6 speed conversion in my '92 16V 020 with a 3.94 R&P,
lightened flywheel, and Neuspeed clutch. The whole shebang cost about 6
grand when all was said and done, that's with ND doing all the work. Plan
your finances accordingly...
Oh, and I got my Gemini conversion kit from Stealth Racing in Jolly Old, not
Eurospec, but don't tell anybody ;-).
