At the bottom of the strut (looking as installed in the car) is a 13mm bolt.
This holds end of the piston of the actual cartridge (not sure what you call
it). Take all the springs off, loosen the bolt and give it a tap and it
will slide out of the sleeve. Basically just a bump-stop in some
grease/oil. I just packed quite a bit in there, right on top of the bump
stop (so it will end up in the bottom of the tube when put back together) I
figured worst case is I put too much in it would just make a mess
overflowing, but probably wouldn't hurt anything. I wonder with a grease
gun if you would be able to squirt some in there without taking them
apart....but I didnt try it.

I didn't ask about a special type of grease, and the H&R guy didn't suggest
anything. I used regular wheel bearing grease as I didn't have any other
kicking around. The grease that is already in there is different but I
don't know if I will hurt anything or change performance at all by using
different product.

After taking the setup apart I better understand how they work, I don't
think the area where the grease goes is a real mission critical area,
totally separate from the actual shock insert, but it did make a difference.

I apologize for the poor description, I can't do a whole lot better, maybe
someone else can add to it. But its pretty self explanatory once you start
taking things apart

If yours are new I would set the height where you want it and forget it,
that worked for me. If they are used and you are going to change the ride
height then it may be worth it, but not totally necassary.
Not sure if it makes a difference at all but many of my miles are pounding
across some of NY's best roads / bridges etc etc. (covered with Volkswagen
sized potholes) So they may have taken more of a beating than some others.

Im gone for 4 days but feel free to Email me privately if you need some more
info.....
