Remove A-Arm (Control Arm)
Remove A Arms (Control Arms)
(The following is from memory. aqn Jan 5, 2004)
-
First, here are
some pics
of the general area around the A arms.
-
Loosen wheel's lug bolts.
-
Jack car up
and
put it on stands.
-
Remove wheel (five 17mm bolts, 85 ft./lbs.).
-
Remove caliper (one 16mm nut (??? ft./lbs. & one 18mm nut (44? ft./lbs.) );
hang the caliper on the spring. (I use a piece of coat hanger wire).
-
Remove brake rotor (one Phillips head screw; use an impact screwdriver).
(More info:
How-to: Replace brake rotors & pads (and bleed the brakes).)
-
Unbolt balljoint carrier from outboard end of A arm (three ??? bolts, ??? ft./lbs.).
-
Put jack under subframe to support the subframe.
Unbolt A arm's rear bolt (which goes through the A arm &
its bracket/subframe, into the underbody), one 18mm nut, ??? ft./lbs.
-
Unbolt A arm's front bolt, one 19mm??? bolt, ??? ft./lbs.
On the passenger side, you will need to
remove the oil
pan
to remove this bolt.
The A arms' front bolt is horizontal & North-South.
On the passenger-side A arm, the bolt's head is about 3/4" or
less from the back of the oil pan.
You can probably avoid removing the
oil pan by just loosening the front bolt far as you can, then removing
its back bolt & the sway bar bracket completely,
then drop its rear down far enough to slide it back &
down off of the front bolt. But when you put the A arm back on, you'd
need to torque that bolt, and there's no room to get a torque wrench on it.
