OK, here it is guys. I now have a side-by side pic of the two
"different" struts used on our cars. See it at:

The 1995 struts do indeed have their spring perches approximately 3/4"
higher on the body of the strut than the later cars do. So any of you
1995 owners can get 3/4" of lowering "for free" when you upgrade your
struts. If you buying Bilsteins, just buy the "late" model struts.
According to Arthur, Koni has discontinued their 1995-style struts, so
if you go that route, you will be getting "late" style struts whether
you want them or not. I don't know what the situation is with SPAX or
Boge.
What I find curious is that VW decided to lower the perch instead of
raising the lower mounting bosses on the strut. Raising the lower
bosses would have lowered the entire strut assembly, and would have
retained the same (very generous) wheel travel. I wonder if the strut
interfere with something on the suspension if you did that. The
1995-style struts do have one advantage: 3/4" extra wheel travel. This
can be important when off-roading. <g>
