Apparently the deal is that generic PS fluid shortens the life of the
o-rings and seals inside the pump.  My problems were related to air in
the system and inconsistent assist - caused by, you guessed it, worn
out o-rings and seals.

Hmmm, on that note, the Valvoline is a synthetic fluid that is
non-clogging/non-foaming, and "Seal" lubrication friendly.  Partially why I
chose it.  I also replaced the O-rings while I was at it.   Sooooooo, I really
wonder if there would be a problem staying with the Valvoline SynPower PS
fluid?

Jury is still out.  If I can get to my wholesaler I will just switch to
Pentosin.  I may have to run the first event with the Valvoline however.  Can't
imagine it will do any harm for 1 week.

Upon re-reading the label on my Pentosin container:  "Synthetic
automotive hydraulic fluid".  Contents:

White mineral oil, Distillates of petroleum- dewaxed light paraffinic,
Amines, polyethylene compounds...

Says also it's safe for use in hydro-pneumatic suspensions and shock
absorbers.

If the Valvoline fluid contains similar materials, I'd assume it's
safe to use.  Pentosin is expensive at $CDN 33/litre (about $25 US).
How much is the Valvoline stuff?

I mentioned this a few weeks ago on H2O-VW but it's worth repeating again.

When I bought my '92 Golf in April 1996 the ps fluid had a dark metallic
looking color.  Terrible looking!  I bought three cans of the Pentosin
(@ $23/can!) and flushed and replaced the old fluid.  The place I got it
from said it is the same stuff the local VW dealer uses when they run
out of their ps fluid.

Anyway, since filling it up to "MAX" line almost three years ago it is now
about 1/3 above the "MIN line.  I have not added any fluid since then and
it has not given me any problems.  The car now has 194,000 miles on it.

    Around '91ish Volkswagen sent us a Service Bulletin announcing that they were
discontinuing the Dexron in their steering systems. The new improved fluid to
replace it was none other than the green (Pentosin, to you aftermarket geeks)
"Central Hydraulic Oil" Audi had been using since '83. I remember the bulletin
stating that it was OK to mix the new green mineral oil in the old Dexron based
systems but was very clear about not adding Dexron to the newer cars(?).
    Mannix, I'm wondering what Audi model you have. I (like every other Audi guy)
have witnessed the horrible fragility of all Type "44" chassis(83-91 5000-100-200)
central hydraulic systems. Even with a strict diet of green (Pentosin) Audi
hydraulic oil the systems leak like a sieve in time-racks, pumps, hoses, etc. I
have repaired a number of these poor cars that had been attacked by -something
else- and had their steering hydraulic systems rotted and bloated into a really
gross goo.
    Happily, our beloved Volkswagens have pretty kick-ass p/s systems that
generally outlast our cars.

Part number G 002 012 is what you want--no need to go back to the
dealership. I replaced both my PS
hi-pressure line and steering rack last summer and have had the same
stuff that the dealer sold you in my
car since then. Many miles and HPDEs later and not a single problem.

You can get the Fluid anywhere you want
most auto stores carry it, it is called PENTOSIN
it is in a green can.

fyi, it aint special VW fluid, its just regular
hydralic fluid.  too many myths floating around.

True but I was not able to find it at either the Pep Boys or Autozone out by
me.  It's special cause when you have to buy it from the dealer there has to
be some explanation for the gouging.

R&S Straus has it on there shelves.

They gouge us because it has a metal can lol and not
plastic.
