Dear Steve,
My son and I just replaced his P/s pump on his 92 Vr6
Corrado. There's not a whole lot to it. You remove
the belt cover(all of this is underneath), put a 13mm
3" threaded bolt into the belt tension reliever(well
this is above), release the belt tension. Before that
loosen the P/s banjo connector at the pump until you
have a solid drool of P/s fluid draining into a
can/bottle, etc. When the fluid stops, remove the
infeed line(hose clamp) and drain it too. Undo the 6
13mm bolts(3 on each side) that hold the pump to the
motor. Remove serpentine belt, remove pump, swap the
pully from the old to the new.(6 or 8mm hex drive
bolts) Installation is the reverse of disassembly. Be
sure to get VW certified P/s fluid on refill. The pump
on the Corrado ran $250 with a $50 core cost. We
replaced the belt at the same time. It will make a
racket while it is self priming; I preprimed by
loosening the banjo fitting again after reassembly and
new fluid added.
George

Getting ready to replace the power steering pump in my '98 GTI. Haven't looked at the Bentley yet, but
I'm just looking for any tips, advice, gotcha's etc? PITA or piece of cake? If it is like anything else
on this engine, I'm guessing PITA...

If your changing the power steering pump,
the first thing you should do is remove the PULLEY,
since you will be reusing it. It is alot easier to
remove it, while its on the engine still, so you can
hold it in place with a screwdriver, thru the circular
holes in the pulley, then take out the 5 bolts holding
it to the frame. The hoses are banjo style, so you
remove the bolt holding them down, dont lose the
copper
washers. Power steering fluid, comes out pretty fast,
so be prepared to catch it, its going to be messy =P

Once you have everything back together, and the car is
turned on, turn the steering wheel all the way left
then right, so you can bleed out the system, do this
several times.

Make sure you have some pentosin, I think you need 2
cans, im not sure on that.

Hey Tony,

Let me know if you find a cheap place to source the power steering line
that goes across the front. I think it's the pressure side, not the
return side? Mine is leaking (like everyone else's i imagine?) and the
replacement host is over $200 at most places.

You can see the p/s pump under the VR on the passenger side. Either the
hose is leaking, or as on mine, the pump body where the elbow goes into it.
You should be able to see it by looking under there.

I just replaced the P/S pump on my 97 GLX because the elbow lost a battle
with a speed bump (courtesy of my friend who is "babysitting" my car while
I'm working in the US). The GTI-VR6 library was a lifesaver for
information.

While under the car, I noticed a few places that "could" possible be weak
points for future leaks to develop. Because I couldn't just order a new
elbow fitting, I ended up purchasing a rebuilt P/S pump for $310CDN from the
stealership (time was of the essence, so I didn~Rt shop around). The price
of the damn Pentosin (P/S fluid) was something like $45CDN for 1L (+/- 1
quart)!!!!

I would put a piece of cardboard/paper under the car to help determine where
the leak is coming from. It makes it much easier when trying to locate the
general area of the leak.
