I've got a torn steering rack boot on my 95 GTi VR6, and I plan to replace
it next weekend. The Bentley shows 2 different racks for our cars. I don't
have access to a lift right now, and my car is WAY low, so is there a way to
tell which rack I have from above? Anybody ever replaced the boots
themselves, and if so, any tips?<
Greg,
If you look from the top of the car near the brake resovoir area down,
you'll see the rack. If the finish is "bumpy", then it's a ZF rack, if
it's smooth, then it's a TRW. I know it very well since I fried my ZF
($$$$) rack. The TRW are about 1/2 the price new and 1/3 less rebuilt than
ZF's. The clamp on the inside boot is a BITCH. They've gone to a zip tie
instead if a clamp.
The later cars have TRW racks.
