Hey all,

I have to move a riding lawn mower/tractor from my parents' place. It's about 3.5 hour drive-time, so it's
not close.

U-haul trucks don't have a wide enough ramp. I was thinking about renting a full size pickup and some
ramps to move it, but I could also rent an open trailer.

With our cars as short and stubby as they are, I'm not sure they're really suitable for towing a trailer.
Anyone have any experience with doing something like this?

It's not a particularly heavy thing either...

You should be fine....Ideally you want a long wheel base for towing. Most
unibody cars are rated for 1500lbs.

It is better to wear out than it is to rust out.

my buddy has an 04 tdi wagon and he pulls a 4x6 trailer. i think he towed
his polaris 700 4x4 four wheeler about 70 miles with it. he's gotten a few
hundred pounds of firewood from my house a couple different times too.

Every summer I tow a small (4x8) flat trailer with a small boat on it with no problem at all (even with a
lowered car). Last fall I bought a 17 foot sailboat that weighs 515lbs (plus trailer and extras) and was
a *little* worried that I would have to tow it from Wisconsin to Connecticut. It turned out to be
perfectly fine.

I think a lot of the old towing worries come from older American cars with *really* soft springs, no
steering feel and no brakes. That, and people constantly saying that they bought an SUV because they need
to tow something?!?! My family has always had a boat and we've always towed it with European cars (from
BMW 2002s and Volvo 240s to a Passat and -next summer- an A6) and never had any problems with handling or
power.

good luck,
erik

As long as it's not too heavy and loaded correctly, you should be fine.
Check out:
_www.hitch-web.com_ (http://www.hitch-web.com)

They list one for the GTi supporting 2500 lbs. gross (includes trailer) and
250 lbs. hitch (tongue) weight. Personally, I don't think I'd want to tow
2500 lbs. with a GTi.
