2 days ago whenever I locked my car the pump would just keep running after
all the doors were locked, so you'd hear that humming sound for about 25-30
seconds. I posted my problem to the newsgroup and Steve offered some sound
advice, told me he'd had one of the vacuum line connectors come off - that
was going to be a lot of work to check for, I thought, so I went to the
dealer after work and Tony, the service manager, offered to come out and
take a look. He put his ear to each door to listen for a leak in the
vacuum lines, but he couldn't find anything. I then told him that if I tap
the gas cap cover the pump usually stops. He then had me open the trunk and
he ripped out the carpeting and showed me the 'actuator' that locks the gas
cap and told me I probably need a new one, so I bought one ($33). When I
got home I took the old one out and sure enough there was a little hole in
a plastic sheath that holds the locking pin for the gas cap cover.
I was noticing water in my trunk, Tony also mentioned a problem he had seen
with some cars in that their taillights start leaking water into the trunk,
usually after the trunk has been slammed or something jammed in the opening
and caused a slight crack in the taillight, or the gasket around the light
won't be seated right. He told me to take the lights out and put some
sealant around them. There were just three nuts to unscrew and the lights
came out, I took some sealant and covered the opening with sealant,
squished the lights back in place kinda jiggled them a little to make sure
they seated and tightened them back in place, hopefully no more problems.
Just thought I'd pass this on in case anyone else has similar problems, I
always knew those locks would give me a problem. Hope this helps someone.
If anyone is in the suburban Philadelphia area and in need of a dealer
check out North Penn Mazda Volkswagen, I've had nothing but great service
from Tony and the whole parts department.
