Hi all,

I was trying to change the transmission fluid in my
MR2. I would be done by now, except that the lower
transmission bolt is on there real tight.. and it's a
little rounded. My efforts to loosen it with a 24mm
socket and a big wrench only rounded it even more. :(

also, it looks like the bolt had a slot cut into on of
the sides to help someone get more leverage to tighten
it down previously! it looks like this:
 __
/ \_|/

but, I don't have a tool that will let me leverage
that slot in the bolt :(

can one of the grease monkeys here give some advice as
to how to get that stubborn bolt out of there?

thanks,
Peter

1) Good quality vice grips and BFH (hammer)
2) Welder (weld another nut onto it)

I've used both methods successfully.

One technique I've used to good effect is to use a hammer and cold chisel to
apply impact at the periphery of the stuck bolt or nut (in the loosening
direction, of course). If you have enough room around the bolt to swing a hammer
(the bigger, the better) and can get a good purchase on the edge with the
chisel, one or two sharp blows will almost always free it.

HTH,

Jay

A co worker had good luck with the Craftsman Bolt-Out sockets

This would probably be the simplest solution for the average home mechanic.

FWIW, these work extremely well. We have a set here at the shop that we use often.
