I sell tools (SK, OTC, IR, etc, etc, etc.) since I'm hooked up with a large
tool distributor. Anyhow, when it came to getting a jack for myself, I
purchased an OTC. Low lift cup, well built (my uncle's gas station uses the
same one in NYC), but more than $200 (not much). It weighs 90+ lbs and I
need a low jack at the track. Well, the damn thing is heavy and practically
dropping it down from my 4x4 pickup isn't healthy for me or the jack. I went
searching for an aluminum racing jack. Most are $700-$800! My cost on the
OTC racing jack (which I now own) was $525. (retail is $700.) Well worth the
price for someone like me. This was about the time the Cotco/Harbor Frieght
jacks came out for $200. A LOT of people purchased these. Overall, they're
suitable, but I've seen 3 of them (so far) with broken cups. A corner seems
to break off easily. One dropped a Porsche at Watkins Glen because of
this... a jack stand was there and nobody got hurt at all. Truth be told, if
you used a hockey puck or wood for a proper, centered spacer- the jack
lifting cup might last forever. Anyhow, I don't think $200. is a lot for a
nice jack, and if you're careful with the mounting cup (or replace it with
something else), the "cheap" new lightweight jacks on the market are a good
buy.
