Volkswagen January Sales Climb 10.2% to 348,400 Cars
Wolfsburg, Germany, Feb. 11
(Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen AG, Europe's largest carmaker, said January unit
sales rose 10.2 percent on strong demand in North America, Asia and its
largest market, Western Europe.
The maker of the Golf, New Beetle and Jetta sedans said it sold 348,400 cars
in January, the most ever in a January, up from 316,200 in the same month a
year earlier. Sales in Western Europe climbed 16.7 percent to 230,400 cars
from 197,500, as measured by registrations, in January 1998.
Volkswagen has enjoyed strong demand on its home turf after introducing a
stable of new models including its New Beetle, a revamped Golf and, through
its Audi AG luxury unit, the TT Coupe.
``The new delivery record is the result of an improved delivery network and
stronger marketing,'' said Robert Buechelhofer, management board member
responsible for marketing and sales.
Despite weak economies in Asia, VW said sales there increased 32.3 percent to
30,400 vehicles, largely because of a 45 percent jump in Chinese sales. Sales
of VW cars in North America rose 27.7 percent to 30,300.
Sales in South America and South Africa, which the company counts as one
region, dropped 22.1 percent to 37,000 cars, VW said.
Sales of VW brand cars rose 22 percent last month over January 1998 to 232,200
cars, while Audi sales grew less than 2 percent to 42,000 luxury sedans.
The company blamed a 3.5 percent decline in January sales at its Spanish Seat
unit on the introduction of a new Toledo sedan, which took away production
capacity as the carmaker re-tooled. Bad economic conditions in Eastern Europe
led to a 14.8 percent decline in January sales at its Czech Skoda car unit,
which sold 22,900 cars, and sales at its commercial vehicle unit, which fell
5.3 percent to 15,600 light trucks and vans.
VW shares rose 1.06 euros to 64.16 ($72.54).
