Jay,
there should a switched power lead in there. The stock head unit feeds
power to the antenna via the center lead of the thick black co-axial
antenna cable - its not an external wire in the harness. However comming
off of your new Denon there should be an amp- turn on and/or an antenna
turn on lead that you can use to connect to your "POWERED" antenna adaptor
- you did get one of these right?

I'm planning to install a Denon in-dash CD player in my '98 GTI-VR6 today
and would really appreciate some help.
Does anyone know where the antenna power lead is in the '98 cars? It doesn't
appear to be in the harness that plugs into the back of the factory radio.
And it doesn't appear to be attached to the thick black antenna cable. (This
is where it was in my '91 GTI.)
I know that the antenna needs power from the head unit, but I can't find the
f*#$ing wire!
BTW, I already checked the archives.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Jason, You have to buy the adapter. If you got your Denon from Crutchfield
they should have supplied you with a free one- otherwise you'll have to order
one (probably from Crutchfield- my local stereo shop told me to go to my
VW Dealer because it was proprietary and I told them to go jump in a lake.)

I realized about a month after the install that I didn't have the adapter and
Crutchfeild 2nd day'd it free of charge. Now I'm getting stations over three
hundred miles away with the right weather conditions (partly cloudy). The
fuba/Blaupunkt combination ROCKS! Even without the fuba being powered
the local stations here were strong and I was getting a couple of stations from
about ninety miles away in certain (raised) parts of town- with the right weather
conditions.

search for 'FUBA' in the archives and look at the entry called "The
final word on Fubas" or something like that. It'll explain to you that
the factory deck pumps out 12v to the antenna lead directly. You'll need
the Crutchfield DIN-12 adaptor to compensate in your aftermarket deck.
Good luck! It took me while to get my system rocking correctly :)

Thanks Jim. I was starting to lose my mind looking for that stupid wire.
=8-}

I do not have the correct harness at the moment but I will order one from
Crutchfield today. I bought an antenna adapter at my local car-stereo shop
but it will NOT carry 12v to the factory antenna cable. It is designed to
carry the AM/FM signal only. There is no connection for a power lead.

Thanks again,
Jason
