Subject: [gti-vr6] Do I need to pull motor to pull crank?/REAL tech
Hey all, specifically Peter, Arthur, Mike, and Veearesix,
I need to pull the crankshaft and one piston/rod assembly out of my
neighbors VR6 with a spun rod bearing. Can it be accomplished with the
motor in the car? I have a pit which allows me to work on the car from
underneath, so we won;t be laying on our backs. We're also going to be
installing some unorthodox pulleys, a set of Kent 264s, and a clutch master
cylinder. All this work leads me to believe it would be easier to pull the
motor out of the car before proceeding. Any opinions would be appreciated

Well, I'm not any of the above, but maybe I can help...
The motor does not technically need to be pulled to replace the crank, but it
damn near has to be stripped clean:
The intake has to come off to access the timing chain covers, which in turn
means that the trans has to come out. The lower chain cover can only be
removed with the trans out, and you'll need to undo the lower timing chain.
Since the subframe has to be pulled to drop the tranny, you'll have nothing
supporting the engine from below, which means you better have a damn good
engine support bar.... or just drop the engine and do it all out of the car!
The head has to come off to pull the pistons if you want (does not if you're
just pulling the crank).
