Ok,

After much review and deliberation on both the turbo and supercharger
I've decided that eventaully I want to have a turbo.  That being
decided I had some questions and also wanted to get some feedback.

Yes it will be a daily driver, I know it will make the car not as
reliable of a daily driver.  This is why I was looking at yanking
a turbo off of a 1.8t.  I've talked to a couple of people about
this and they've lead me to believe that this is probably one of
the most reliable things I can do (seeing as it is tuned to a VW
engine already).  What else can I expect to have done besides custom
exhaust manifold and some valve work?  Any one know of a good source
for newer salvage cars?  Thanks emincely,

You've been led in the wrong direction.  The K03 from a 1.8T was
designed for a 1.8T and not a 2.8L VR6.  The turbo will be too small
for a VR6 application.  Even if it did work, the K03 would not be any
more reliable than any other aftermarket turbo because the VR6 wasn't
designed as a turbo motor.  As such, you will still have to add all
the necessary plumbing, exhaust manifold, intercooler, etc.  Also, you
don't really need valve work for your "basic" low-boost turbo setup.

www.hpamotorsports.com for turbo information.  Keep in mind
that you'll be spending at least $4500 for the turbo parts, not
including installation.  Plus, I'd recommend other upgrades as well,
if you haven't already done so.  Suspension, brakes, wheels/tires,
lower dogbone mount (for a Mk4), etc.  You cannot just slap a turbo
on an otherwise stock VR6 and call it a day.  Gotta do lots of
research....but this is a start.

Absolutely not!!  The K03 is almost too small for the
1.8 engine, let alone a 2.8!

(shudder) Tuning.

Don't expect factory reliability, that's a pipe dream.
 If you need that kind of reliability, sell your car
and buy a car from the factory equipped with a turbo.

Also expect to spend $5000+ in parts alone and upwards
of $1500 in labor.

i was running a t3/t4 on a vr... and it was the absolute minimum size i
would do... the k03 is TINY... the KKK series turbos are very undersized in
both the compressor and turbine housings.. as well as being very very
expensive...  for the price of a K03 turbo you can purchase a t-04 60-1
make 380 whp ...

Any thoughts on this setup?  It's used and I've been thinking about this for a while.  It'd be about $400 (parts only of course) but I'd still need an intercooler and bpv.  I was under the impression that a T3 was a little small for a VR6... maybe I was wrong.

Not terribly small, but generally a t3/t4 hybrid is more desirable for
the slightly increased volume.  A t3 may drop off too soon too.  Power
may peak before you are ready, since its small, it'll spool quick, but
also reaches it's peak output quick.  Hope that helps!  L8z

In our opinions, a T3 is way too small for a VR6.
We started out trying a T3/T4 hybrid, but even that was a little too small.
We now run a T04E 57trim.

how can the t3\4 be to small? were talking of running maybe 7-12 psi correct? 
due to a high comp: motor... on my eclipse  cyl 2.0 i ran a 16g tdo5h  @ 20 
psi all day long, will the T3's not even hold 12 psi or so?   later guys,, 
p.s. are all the turbo guys running EGT gauges? if so whats max boost on 
stock fuel? 

The T3/4 will move enough air but it will struggle on the exhaust side. Our
Stg 2 MK IV turbo makes 10PSI @2500rpms with a full TO4E 57 so boost
response isn't an issue. With the increased exhaust flow we lower EGTs and
pick up hp on the top end........ But a T3 turbine will be seriously torquey
on a VR!!!
