depends, sometimes this is a bitch to take out, due to
its location.

I have a scar from this job lol i sliced my head
on the end of the cat shield.

The only thing difficult about changing the oxygen sensors is working in the tight space. VW makes some special wrenches to make this easier but I managed to do it with a small crescent wrench and a couple open
end wrenches.

the downwind sensor on the audi was a pain. i could get a wrench on it but
it was too long to turn. i had a stamped steel wrench from an old router in my scavenged tools drawer and opened it up to fit. i used the wrench as a
template to get the opening right. it took longer to find the wrench than
to mod it and remove the sensor.

I used a standard O2 sensor wrench that I bought at a local autoparts store. Sprayed some penetrating lubricant on them. Both sensors came out easily.

Yeah, IIRC it took me a couple hours to replace the oxygen sensors. Most of the time was spent crawling
in/out from underneath the car to hunt for a different wrench when my chosen wrench wouldn't fit for whatever reason. I'm glad the o2 sensors only need replacement every 100K miles or so. I'll most likely
have gotten rid of this car by the time they need replacing again.

Thanks all for the info!
Last Thursday I brought my car in to get a freebie repair on a "CHECK ENGINE
LIGHT" that's been on for the last month or so. The car ran fine and I managed to clear the code using ROSS-TECH shareware software.

I matched the fault code to the Bentley and realized it had sometime to do with oxygen... Oxygen what, I had no clue. I guessed it was the Mass Air
Flow sensor dying again so I decided to bring the car in for repair. That
part is supposed to be warranted until sometime in 2006.
The dealer happily scanned the car for $86... Then said, the estimated the
cost of the repair would be...
                                                                                                              1 hours work for $92
Cost of part $70
Cost to clear the fault code $43... "This is where, sitting in my office I
got a big fat grin on my face..." Listening on the phone I was told that "You have to program the sensor so that it works" Yeah sure, VW wrenches
are now programming and compiling C code to get the cars working... "Yeah,
and you lady start sucking on my French D%CK".
Total estimated bill = 86+92+70+43= $291 + 15% taxe = $334
I said, "No thanks..."
So this week I will attempt to change both sensors, pre and post cat... For
hopefully less then the quoted $334. I'm already down 86 so I figure I got
$242 to play with...
By the way I found this post on VWVORTEX, looks pretty straight forward
except finding the sensor wrench...
                                                                                                              http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1138563

Other DYI's for the same author"Gary" I don't know the rest of his name but the DYI's are all beautifully made.

Just for general information on pricing of oxygen sensors, I have just discovered something a little weird?

Priced in Canadian dollars the:
front oxygen sensor is priced at 67$
rear oxygen sensor is priced at 35$
You will notice the biggest difference in price is on the rear 02 sensor.
For some reason, because the rear 02 sensors are so cheap, I may buy a
couple extra sensor and attached them to my boxer shorts... Could be the solution to post beer and nuts fumes...

Front http://www.parts4vws.com/catalog/product_detail.asp?PartNumber=021906262B
