Subject: [gti-vr6] Charcoal cannister in '98+

(Note: This is tech info for people who need that hole open under
the stock airbox for 98-99.5 cars.)

What a royal pain in the butt. I'm moving my charcoal cannister
in preparation for the blower intake tubing going that way.
I did this on Kurt's car when we put in the Icebox/Airbath setup
but my 98 has something different. The cannister itself is
not as big as it was on Kurt's car, but it's got 3 tubes coming
off it, plus an electrical wire/plug. I don't recall having to deal
with a wire on Kurt's 96. Plus the third hose is attached to a
completely separate air filter which bolts to the strut tower.

I contemplated relocating it to the drive side, and then finally
said screw it, and detached all the hoses, pulled the thing
out, re-attached all the hoses from the topside and simply jammed
it into the little hole in the fender just outboard of where
the stock airbox would go. I even verified that the stock airbox
still fits with the cannister stuffed into that space. Then I
zipped tied it in place. I'll probably make a real bracket for it one
of these days as there's some holes I can use. I did pull the
other little black filter thingy off its bracket and attached it
to my own little flat bracket on the outside, by the fender.

For the wire, I cut the tape on the wiring bundle, peeled the wire I wanted
back some and retaped it with enough distance to reach up to the new
location (there's two other wires in the same bundle.. one to horn I think,
and one to outside thermometer).

Here's a couple photos.

That one is taken from the top, very close. The charcoal cannister
is almost entirely disappeared into the hole in the fender. The hoses
are all flexible so they'll lay wherever I need them to.

And here's one of what it all looks like from above.

Notice the cannister is completely out of view. The hole where it
used to be is open. And the little filter cannister on the lower
left has been moved from its bracket on the strut tower (note unused bolt
posts), to the fender. The open element filter seen here will eventually
live down below the hole just above the splash guard. I just stuck
it on the MAF using some of the tubing from the S/C kit so I could drive
the car.

Tommorrow, the blower goes in. ;) :) :)
