I just noticed that my fans aren't turning on.
When you turn the A/C on, that's supposed to force the fans to spin up,
correct? They're not.

Anything that I can quickly check? Connections, fuses, anything like that?

This morning I finally got around to checking the fuse (#19), and it's
good. So it's not a blown fuse. What would cause my fans to not spin up?

depends on the temperature, they might not need to come on.

True... But I seem to remember in the past, if I was on the freeway for
20+ minutes, when I turn my car off, the fans would be spinning for a
couple minutes after I turned the car off. Since I did the headgasket, I
haven't heard them turn on or off once.

One day last week I was in pretty heavy traffic, and noticed that the
coolant temp was getting up there, and it didn't go down until I was
moving again. I really don't think they're working right.

Could be the fan switch :-)

If the temp sensor wasn't working, the temp gauge wouldn't show the
temperature, right? I'm definitely seeing the coolant temp move.

Check the following and make sure they are plugged in:

Main harness on the fan
harness for sensor on radiator
3 harness on t-stat block, blue, yellow, brown

Do you have enough coolant?
Do you have pressure in the hoses?
Water pump failure?
Blockage in the lines?

Check Fan Control Module?
Theres a fuse in there, it located by the coolant fill bottle, and has a
white little plastic cap on it.

Main harness on the fan - Looked good, but I disconnected & reconnected,
no go

Harness for sensor on radiator - Don't know where it is
3 harness on housing - All look good.

Enough Coolant - Yes
Pressure in the hoses - I believe so, but I'd have to warm the car up again
Water pump failure - I hope not, the one in there is only 2 years old,
but I believe it's working
Blockage - How would I know?

Fan Control Module - Checked fuses, both (20A & 5A) look good.

Too bad I can't get to it. :^(

Just read the "old" low-temp fan switch How To, and I'm intruiged. Where
would one pick up a low temp switch? Sounds kinda nice. Especially
seeing my coolant bounce like a chick without a ShockAbsorber.

Update:

Just tried hotwiring the fans to the battery, and they do indeed work.

Sooo... At least I know the fans work, I suppose.

The parts guy at my vw shop suggested taking out the relay (fan control
module) and looking underneath it to see if it's corroded underneath. He
also said that the part would be around $140 or so. Sound about right?

Just got the replacement Fan Controller Module (part number 3A0 919 506,
which replaces my old one, part 357 919 506), slapped it in there,
pressed the AC button, and what do you know, the fans kicked on. Sweet
Mary I'm so glad this ordeal is finally over :^)

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
