Hi Mike and all on the list.

I just tried installing my Whipple mount today and I had a little trouble.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong...since no one else is complaining about
it.

The problem is when I try to install the blue poly donut (hockey puck with
a hole in it) and the aluminum plate with the 8mm bolt, the plate would
not sit flush with the donut. There is no play, it is tight, but it just
isn't straight. But that's not all. When I try to put the second blue
donut in place and put the cover/bracket back on, it would not fit. I can
only reinstall two of the three nuts back on. I then compared the
size(thickness) of the whole system (two donuts and the Al plate) with the
original squishy mount and have fount that the Whipple mount is thicker by
the thickness of the Al plate. Do I have a bad mount? Or am I skipping a
step? I've read the instructions 3 times and have referred back and forth
to the illustrations that came with it many times but still cannnot figure
this out. I almost got so frustrated that I was going to hack one of the
blue donuts with a hack saw. I then put the old mount back in and is very
dissapointed...

Can someone help?

It does fit tight- mine was like that- you just have to put all the screws
in and tighten them little by little, alternating each one.

Mine went on straight though.. that sounds weird!

Joey,

Per the installation instructions, you remove (3) 13mm nuts, remove (1)
8mm allen bolt, pull the old mount, slide the new one and the washer
in, put a drop of loctite on the 8mm bolt, tighten, put the bottom
part of the mount in, put the cover on, re-install the 3 nuts with a
torque wrench to 25 lbs, and you are motoring! 15 minutes tops . . .

As far as the aluminum plate goes, what do you mean by it not being
flush? Let me know and I will try to help you troubleshoot what is going on.

The bottom cover/bracket will compress the second "donut". Tighten
each of the three screws a little bit at a time, so the plate evenly
compresses the donut. Make sure to use a torque wrench as indicated
set to 25lbs. I bet this will solve your problem with not getting the
 third bolt tightened.

I did my install this weekend and it was really easy. Let me know if I
can help or call Mike Potter at parts4vws, his number is on the
website www.parts4vws.com. He's a super nice guy and will be glad to
 help you.

Regards and good luck,
Manny

Yup, did just that. Except I was not able to get one of the three nuts
back on. I even tried using a jack to raise the 'cover' up to the three
screws. There is just not enough thread. I tried tightening the other
two so that I may be able to squish the donuts enought that I can try to
put the third nut back on...but no good. The screws are simply too
short!!! or the donuts are too thick!!!

For some reason after I mount the donut with the aluminum plate, the plate
does not want to sit up against the donut...as if the 8mm bolt just went
in at an angle, but it didn't. I checked the 'socket where the donuts fit
and there was nothing in the way...so WTF?

Let me give you the exact measurements of the donuts and the plate to see
if these are the right size...

donut--14/16 inch
aluminum plate--13/64 inch

I think I will call Mike and have a word with him...

First, I have to agree with Fred on this one. Had the same problem. After I
had my retarded parapalegic 3-year-old nephew (blindfolded and with one hand
tied behind his back) remove the old mount and re-install the new one, the
mount seemed a bit too thick to allow the cover to bolt back up. I couldn't
grab enough thread on all three studs. Quick matter of throwing a small
hydraulic jack underneath and compressing the mount remedied the situation.
Maybe it's something with the '95's?

Hmm.. on my '95,it was tight, but I was still able to get the bolts threaded,
and get it tightened up ther without any trouble. Then again, I had one of the
first-run Whipple mounts- maybe the dimensions have altered slightly since
then?
