Is the crank pulley a "harmonic balancer"?

Do you know if the pulley and the harmonic balancer are one piece? Also do you
know if the engine is internally or externally balanced..?

I want to get to the bottom of this one. This seems to be a worthwhile thing
to persue. I have used pulley kits on other cars, as I have said before, and
*every time* there has been an improvement. Matter of fact, in every test I
have ever seen/read there was at least 5hp increase(at times more) and this
was repeatable on other cars too. I am anxious for Russell to get the answers
for us!
Thanks Russell!!

I've been sitting back and laughing watching you guys go at it. The crank
pulley is in no way, shape, or form a harmonic balancer. It is just a
heavy pulley.

So the crank pulley is seperate from the harmonic balancer? The Bentley was
not much help.

I think this pulley thing could work to give us some more power. I wish
someone who knows about this would speak up here. Dave what do you think about
the whole thing?

WRONG! From the VW service training manual. ( this is an official printed VW book)
"A crankshaft-mounted vibration dampener also serves as the main drive pulley for
the accessories. The power steering pump, A/C compressor, alternator and water pump
are driven by a double sided poly-ribbed belt."
This paragraph has a line pointing to a drawing of the motor. This line points to
the crank pulley.
Also the drawing does show a rubber insert in this pulley making it a two piece
unit.
This is also described in the VR6 technical manual as well.

Well, I'll be damned!! That has to be the worst excuse for a harmonic
balancer I've ever seen. I just pulled mine out and it does, indeed, have
a thin (~4mm) rubber band in between the main stucture of the pulley and
the large outer rib. I just don't see it dampening much. Nothing like
what you normally see in the way of a harmonic balancer...

Well, Todd said some of the BMW guys were having some suspicious
failures under racing conditions. But I talked to at least two
other racers who do VR6s, and they've had no problems under
racing conditions. Both situations were track racing (not
autocross), so the engine gets turned at high rpms under full
throttle for relatively long periods of time.

Mazdas have had problems due to a very weird oil pump setup
inside the motor that when there were some frequencies
undamped, hammered on the internal oil pump and caused
starvation. But remember: 4 cylinders are inherently much
rougher than 6 cylinder engines. I'm saying this because
this is one source of rumours of problems, and I want to
nip this one in the bud.

Go over the VWVortex, and look for "rainnman" in the 12V
section (Stephane Trahan of Trac Racing). Also, you can
ask Russell whose website is:
http://www.supremepower.com/gshock.html
Both these guys are dealers of the pulleys, but they also
both are racers, so...

And you can search the archives at www.gti-vr6.net and
hit the Search Past gti-vr6 Postings link. This will
bring you to the search engine and just search for unorthodox
or something and read up on the past discussion.

BTW - I have both and have no regrets. The car definitely
has more power throughout the range (butt dyno) with the
pulleys. The engine "feels" good.

Jud.

No harmonic balancer is required within the OEM rpm ranges.

The stock crank was 6Lb 13oz and our new piece is 15.2oz. We do not have
weights on the other accessory pulleys. However the VR6 Ultra SS kit kiis
good for 12-14hp to the wheels.

Be sure to upgrade to a good Synthetic Motor oil for better performance as
well...
