I had the same problem as you do..

Wanna know the secret?

DO the above.. THEN, pull the upper AND lower radiator hoses by the battery.
You'll find a bunch of coolant in there. Pour distilled water into the upper
rad. hose, and let it spill out the lower.

Repeat the above twice, driving the car like 2-3 miles between flushes. YOu
should be set to go then!

Good luck!

Make sure you let your engine run with the water long enough to
cycle the cooling fan at least once. Also don't forget to open
your heater to full hot. I too had to flush mine about 4-5 times
before I felt safe putting in the G12.

What's the key to flushing the G11? I've flushed my radiator 3 times now
and there's still a good bit of G11 left. I drained it and poured distilled
water through until I saw water coming out the bottom, but as soon as I
start up my car the G11 shows up. Is it in the heater core? At this rate
I'm going to have to flush it three more times atleast. I know Turbo Tim
mentioned using an air compressor during this process, but I don't have
one.

I've finally made the switch! It took seven flushes and I now have over 12
gallons of the G11 in various tints in my garage. It was a big PITA so if
you know of a shop you can trust to do this properly pay them! It might
have taken fewer flushes if I had an air compressor. Also, the VW hose
clamps are a pain too. Getting them off is easy, but not back on. To reach
the bottom hose its very tight. Part way through the process I switched to
more typical clamps that can be tightened w/a screwdriver or socket wrench
to make life easier.

Thought you guys on on the GTI list might like this info on the drain
plug.
--------------------------------

I'll have to look for it. The Bentley says there's one and to replace
the rubber gasket whenever you drain it. I asked for the replacement
gasket when I was at the dealer and the parts guy didn't know anything
about it. He asked one of the mechanics who said they just added the
drain plugs to the 98's and to just pull the bottom hose. This is at the
best dealership in the area (4 in DFW) so maybe he just didn't know.

It is wise to change the coolant every couple of years or so, but you don't
really need anything special to do it. For as many times as you might flush
the coolant for the life of the car I'd say it isn't worth the trouble of
installing anything.

FWIW, I recently flushed the coolant by disconnecting the hoses that go to
the throttle body and put them into a bucket. I then disconnected the
overflow reservoir and took a garden hose and held it to the hose that comes
off the bottom of the reservoir. I flushed for about 10 minutes. I then
hooked the reservoir back up and poured distilled water in. I turned on the
after run coolant pump and let it pump the distilled water through the
engine and out from the throttle body hoses. You still have to run the car
with water because the radiator t-stat isn't open, but it flushed a lot of
crap out that would have taken a lot longer with the usual
flush-fill-run-repeat cycle.
