MEAT: 4.2M lbs. of ready-to-eat poultry is recalled
Nov. 21, 2002
WASHINGTON - A New
Jersey company under investigation for a listeriosis outbreak is expanding
a nationwide recall of chicken and turkey meat to 4.2 million pounds, the
Agriculture Department announced Thursday.
Jack Lambersky Poultry
Company Inc., of Camden, N.J., is pulling the ready-to-eat meat packaged
between May 29 and Nov. 2 because it may be contaminated with listeria, a
harmful bacterium. The company, which does business as J.L. Foods, initially
recalled 200,000 pounds of the meat on Nov. 2. The products were distributed
to stores and institutions across the country.
Federal inspectors
are uncertain if the bacterium found in the recalled meat matches the strain
linked to the outbreak in the Northeast which sickened 52 people, killing
seven and causing three miscarriages. Investigators still are analyzing a
sample taken Nov. 14 from meat sliced and sold at a business in Brooklyn,
N.Y., according to the Agriculture Department.
The company said in a statement that it is cooperating with inspectors to determine where the meat became contaminated.
J.L. Foods is one
of two companies so far that have issued recalls in connection with the listeria
investigation. Wampler Foods, owned by Pilgrim's Pride, is the other.
A month ago, investigators
found a strain of listeria that matched the one blamed for the outbreak in
a floor drain at the Wampler Foods plant in Pennsylvania, prompting the company
to recall 27 million pounds, the largest recall.
The investigation, led by the USDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is continuing.

The cookies, made

to nonfat dry milk could suffer a "serious or life-threatening" reaction.
However, she said there were no reports of any health problems associated with the cookies.
Kopanski-Wittpenn
said it was not immediately clear in which states the 4-ounce packages were
sold. The cookies all were packaged in clear wrapping with the company's

Retailers who purchased
the cookies were being tracked so any not yet sold could be removed from

Oct. 2, 2002
WASHINGTON - A chocolate
importer is recalling organic chocolate bars sold at Whole Foods Market stores
nationwide. The bars pose a risk to people allergic to nuts or dairy products
because they aren't properly labeled with those ingredients.

Ariz., reports one additional customer complaint, but provided no details.

TIRES: Continental recalls half a million tires from Ford SUVs
Aug. 20, 2002
WASHINGTON - Continental
Tire North America announced today that it is recalling more than half a
million tires installed on Ford Motor Co.'s sport utility vehicles after
some of the tires lost their tread.
Tread separations
led to the recall of millions of Firestone tires in the past two years that
were used primarily on the Ford Explorer. Ford officials say they discovered
the Continental problem through a rigorous internal process put in place
after the Firestone recall to quickly identify possible tire defects.
The recalled Continental
tires were installed as original equipment on 106,701 two-wheel drive Ford
Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs from the 2000 and 2001 model years.
About 60,000 additional tires were sold as replacements on light trucks for
a total of 596,610.
The recall involves
the P275/60R17 size of the ContiTrac AW and General Grabber AW tires made
at the company's plant in Mayfield, Ky. Those involved in the recall have
Department of Transportation codes on the back of the tires that end with
date codes ranging from 109 to 4400, meaning they were manufactured between
March 1999 and October 2000.
Continental's action
is the largest tire recall since Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. announced last
October that it would replace 3.5 million Wilderness AT tires along with
the 6.5 million it recalled in August 2000. Federal officials investigating
the safety of the tires and Ford, which had voluntarily replaced 13 million
Firestone tires on the Explorer, pushed for Firestone's broader recall.
