i was thinking of buying a usb to serial/db9 cable from work and converting 
the pinout to the obd2 connector, i found some info on the pinout for the DSM 
eclipse obd2 plug, i wonder if its the same as the connector for the mk3? ill 
try and find out, it would be a cheap way to scan coded

i think all OBD2 pinouts are the same. Its supposed to be an industry
standard.  Some of the protocols might be different, but the general OBD2
diagnostic protocol is the same. VW/Audi uses another protocol on top of
that as well, which can view the rest of the car's various systems and
modules.

If you want to save a few bux, check out www.obdtool.com . The tool works
with VAG-COM.  My friend here at work builds these. I'm doing some of his
int'l sales now (to help lighten his work load).
