Ya, I'm on my 4th water pump pulley and 3rd water pump. ;)
Has to do with the belt tension needed to drive the S/C
and some other fun stuff.
And note, the "tire" and "wheel" that Marc speaks of are
all made out of the *same* piece of metal. It cracks where the
metal in the pulley is bent around a 180 degree bend, and one piece of
metal becomes two. The outside part slides off and starts
banging against the inside of the fender.
Folks have had the stock water pump die, but I don't think
I've ever heard of it coming off as your mechanic claims.
BTW, I think I got new pump and pulley from http://www.vwparts.com
inside of about 3 days.
