Well, since traffic has been slow., I thought I would update everyone on
my z charger. After about 8 months and many miles, it is no longer. the
beaings on the charger seized coming to a loud and exciting halt. After
that the only way to get the car running was to cut the supercharger
belt. Upon further inspection, there were metal bits everywhere and the
pulley wont even turn by hand. So now I am running around with a very
expnsiv idler pulley.
The good news is that 1552 design, who I puchased it from, and Z eng are
both responsive to the problem and a new charger is on the way before I
send mine back. Yes it is a pain in the ass but it is nice to see
someone standing behind thier products, They are also redesigning the
charger and the warranty replacement will be the new design.
The charger was nice and now life without boost is slow. People who say
the additional power isnt that noticable either never had it or never
had it taken away. I'll keep everyone updated.

On another note, a long while back someone was selling three hole gauge
panels covered in leather for the cup holder. I have one I have never
installed. The panel came with some great instructions which I lost.
does anyone have a copy

Thanks
Ryun

Since things on the list are going to on topic, I thought I would add a
follow up to my z engineering supercharger bit that is in the library.
Here is the whole story:
I installed one of the very first z eng s/c systems on my 98 gti vr6 in
March of 2000. Simple straightforward install. Made the car run very
strong. completely stealth.
In November of 2000 it died
http://www.gti-vr6.net/library/engine/Z_charger_death.html
I had about 15000 miles on it

I recieved a replacement charger about a week ago (March 12 or so). A
long time. It must be said that 1552 design was great throughout the
whole ordeal. here is the scoop: This is now the 3rd iteration of the
charger. Soon after I got the original one, the zr1 was redesigned to
include an oil reservoir to help cool the bearings. They also changer
the pulley design to prevent wear and belt slippage.
On this third edition, the oil reservior is larger and the pulleys are
very different. Seems like the pulleys are going to be very "grippy".
Also they seperated the secondary belt into 2 belts to minimize setup.
Looks like all the bugs have been sorted.
All in all, I would recommend this kit to others. It is pricey but the
build quality is very nice and most aftermarket units dont come with a
12 month warranty, which is nice. Also there should be no labor costs
involved in the install. I did it without instructions in about 5 hrs, 8
beers. No major tools are needed. It is also completely reversible so if
you sell the car or turn in a lease, you wont loose out on all your $$$.
It has a nice stealth feeling and is completely unobtrusive for a daily
driver.

I have pics of the old one installed in anyone is interested

For better or worse, the new one will not make it on my car. I have been
lured over to the dark side. The ginster is getting a turbo fitted as we
speak. Hopefully, she'll end up with around 270 to the wheels. More on
that to come after the weekend...

The main reason I switched from the charger to the turbo system was the increased
power. My car is becoming less of a daily driver than it was so I am less worried
about having to tinker with it. I think for most people an s/c system mght work out
better. For one thing, a properly equipped turbo will be much more money in order to
maintain reliability whether that comes in the much longer install time, increased
maintenance, gadgets like boost controllers, etc.
I never was able to get the z charger on a dyno but I know of several people that
were seeing 250 at the crank on otherwise stock motors/
