hey folks-
just got my Supersprint installed this morning.

[...] 12 lines deleted

A side note: for some odd reason, the hangers did not line up correctly for
the muffler. If they were left alone, the tips would not have cleared the
rear valance. As it was, the installer had to work a little magic with the
rear hanger, but all came out well. Any other Supersprinters have this prob?
BTW, the muffler and pipe, while heavy, still weighed less than the suitcase
by itself!
I'll get some pictures taken soon and post them on my site.

All I can say is what great exhaust system!

I have the same system - I too was very impressed by the construction quality,
sound, and look. I had the same problem with the hangers not matching up
very nicely ( I did the job myself) and to this day it still doesn't look
right. I was told by a few guys that the donuts would loosen up but they
haven't.

One *major* thing to look out for:
I recently noticed that b/c the upswept tips are so close to the rear valence
and get *very hot* that it's starting to warp my rear valence and bumper. Not
too bad, you have to be real close to see it but it's not cool at all. I'm
thinking of obtaining some sort of custom metal plate (seen on many DTM race
cars) but don't know who to go to. Anyone have any ideas?

Imagine that! A Supersprint, or Scorpion exhaust not fitting correctly.
Just to set the record straight for you guys out there...Those exhausts
were NEVER designed to fit your car! They were specifically designed to
fit EUROPEAN cars. That is why it fits incorrectly. Those companies
don't R/D for American cars. Our bumpers aren't the same, among other
things. If you want stuff that fits try american designed stuff, ie;
Neuspeed, Autotech. If you still want a Supersprint or Scorpion, then go
get yourself European bumpers. I saw them at Waterfest on the Eurotech
GTi, so I'm sure they can get them for you. So, don't be so surprised
when something that was never designed for your car doesn't fit right.

Peace out,

Mark

the muffler shop that installed my muffler didn't use spacers. He cut
off the rear muffler mount and welded on a new mount that would allow
the tips to clear. I'll try to get pics of it. It worked pretty well.

What kind of spacers are these? I have the same setup and I have a problem w/
clearing the rear valence as well. Can you send closeups of these? Do you
think I could do the job myself?

thanks,

I used a couple rear shock sleeves (they are found between upper perch and
first nut) and longer bolts. I installed them between the rear hanger mount
and bracket on the body. The proper solution would have been to cut the
tailpipe notch bigger, but that's not something I would do without the
customer's consent! The problem with the spacers is that the muffler hangs
lower than intended and puts the over axle pipe close to hitting the axle
beam.
This system is nicely constructed but obviously for the Euro Golfs only. I
wouldn't recommend it because of the fitment problem, unless the buyer is
willing to hack up the bumper.

I just had my exhaust and AWE short shift installed this past Friday. I
ordered the DTm style tip Supersprint with the resonator. Upon starting
the car no difference and same result while driving, mission
accomplished. This thing sounds NO different than the stock exhaust. I
still can't feel any power improvement and I probably never will. It
was nice though because at the same time I had Todd at AWE install the
exhaust he had also put in my short shifter and all I can say is WOW!
BIG difference. The thing feels 110% better. I don't know what I can
say about the shifter that hasn't all ready been said. Well worth the
small change that it cost to buy it. The tips of the exhaust are the
only thing I have to address in the very near future. Todd had used
spacers on the exhaust mount to clear the rear valence on the car. For
me to have my suspension done soon I will have to probably cut the notch
for factory exhaust a little deeper. Now all I have to do is figure out
how to do it NEATLY. Oh well it looks good!

Clayton,

I too have a Supersprint exhaust, and before switching to the Euro bumpers,
the tips were "tucked" under the black valance. I ran that way for many
miles. The exhaust ended up melting the black plastic a bit, but it wasn't
really noticeable. I actually liked the stealthy look of the tips not
sticking out. I live in the land of fart-coned Hondas, so subtlety is a
refreshing change of pace.

Of course the Euro rear bumper sticks out a lot less than the North American
version. Since the Supersprint exhaust is designed for the European GTI
model, the tips do show more now. I'd say about 2 1/2" of tip extends past
the lower valance. That's plenty of tip for me to go around sporting. Any
more and I'd be getting revved on a lot more than I do now.

As much as I like the Supersprint exhaust, it's probably going to be
replaced by a larger diameter system now that I have a 3.1L motor. To
ensure proper fitment, I'll either have to stick with an exhaust that is
designed for the european models, or I could probably modify a 2.5"
Techtonics/Borla system to fit with the Euro bumpers.

Any other questions?
