Starting in the 2001.5 model year, VW changed the 1.8T motor in the Jetta,
GTI and NB. The motor code went from "AWD" to "AWW." My wife has an AWW
motor. It no longer had the standard K03 turbo. Instead, it and the later
version ("AWP" which began production in 2002 year model) have what VW is
calling a "K03/K04 Hybrid." The exhaust side (the part that makes it spool
up) is from a K03, while the intake side (the part that pumps the compressed
air into the intake manifold) is from a K04. This allows the best of both
worlds, and IMHO is a better turbo than a standard K04. It spools up as fast
as a K03 but gives the better flow of a K04, which gives you more bang with
less turbo lag. The AWW motor was also the beginning of the so-called
Variable Valve Timing, which is supposed to be similar but better than VTEC.
The current AWP motors also have the VVT. The AWW "Hybrid" motors were rated
at 150HP, but are probably a little better than that. The AWP motors are
rated at 180 HP, due to new computer programming.
I love my VR6, but I have a lot of fun driving my wife's 1.8T. Now if I
could just get her to chip it....
Peace, Adrian
