I have a 98 and it does exactly the same thing- except I have never gotten a
check engine light. The dying out seemed to stop when I cleaned out the
prescreen in the airbox.
The problem is most likely due to the ECU. I'm going to complain about it
and have the ECU replaced at my 10,000 mile service and see if the crappy
cold idle goes away.
I've also noticed that in the morning my car ticks when idling until it
warms up. It's not constant either, it ticks for a few seconds and then it's
quiet for a few seconds like clockwork. I'm not sure if its rod knock or
valvetrain related. Maybe the 15W-50 oil is too heavy for this motor. The
ticking goes away once its warmed up.
Oh, and when it's really cold, wow, the transmission sure makes a weird
whining noise!
