I had that similar problem too, with my 97 gtivr6. I happen to open the
hood when it was idling rough. It was like, a cylinder was missing a
spark. Sure enough, it was arcing by the distributor coil pack. It's
not your typical distributor cap, $15 bucks or so. I think, not sure
but from 97-on it has a coil pack. The coil pack itself, runs for about
$350-400, at Timmons VW. You might want to take the cheaper route first
and try 8mm spark plug wires before you drop in a new coil pack. I went
with the new coil pack. I put it in about 6 months ago, with the stock
plug wires. It hasn't done it since then. I recently put in the 8mm
just about 1 month ago. Hope this helps.
