Gee ... no response to my original post. Bummer.

After a little further research, I'm totally frustrated in
determining not only which Optima battery I need but where
the hell to get it. I spent 45 minutes on hold with Pep Boys
who finally told me they have a 34/78 and a 35/75, but could
not tell me which would work with the GTI VR6. Next, I called
the Optima Battery company directly. Their tech dude said the
battery for a GTI VR6 is a type "97R" where R means "reverse
post" and in that case I need to get the Optima Orange Top
battery. He also claimed, to further complicate matters, that
Optima has just changed all of the model numbers. He said I
need model number 34-R-1050.

Someone, anyone ... some enlightenment please. Also, does
anyone know if any of the list-favored online parts places
carry these batteries?

Bobby,

Use the Red Top 800U....You just need to grind down the bracket
slightly, but thats about it...BTW, it has top posts, not sides...I'm
not sure if the battery cables will be long enough for sides...

I've always stocked and installed the 800U "red-top, dual terminal"
batteries. The mounting bracket requires some cutting or grinding to fit
correctly in a GTi-VR6. Also, I've only installed them in cars with
aftermarket (stereo, etc.) wiring, so the terminal ends are always different.
In my personal car, I've used both the front terminals with GM style gold
adapters to rings, as well as the top-mount for more conventional styled gold
plated connectors.
Optima batteries are worth the expense and effort, but for a stock car, a
$40. Champion battery goes a long way.
The best advice I can give to any owner is that the factory grounds and
battery to starter to alternator harness is minimal. It pays BIG dividends
to upgrade the factory wiring and grounds, providing less resistance and
therefore more current flow to the starter (for faster starts requiring less
energy) and faster battery recharging. In fact, my 1995 stock battery lasted
4 years (4 winters), and still worked fine before I converted to an Optima
(and I live in upstate NY). My first modification? You guessed it- upgraded
the factory wiring. I learned this lesson working on 16V GTis and GLis.
When upgrading the wiring, I crimp AND solder and shrink tube (or vinyl tube)
all connections. This requires at least a 400W soldering gun for 4ga. wiring
and larger. I have a 500W gun which works even better!
I have Interstate-branded Optimas in stock. I sell them for $125, and if
pre-paid, free shipping. Wiring is generally done on a custom basis
depending on quantity, size, and connections. With most customers this is
approx. $200. with labor included.

The correct Optima battery for our cars is the orange top. It has the same
properties as the red top but the position of the positive and negative
battery posts are reversed. This way you will not need to reroute the
cables or put the battery in "backwards."
I am in the process of trying to find it locally, I have found that Pep boys
has the red and yellow but very few places carry the orange. I did find a
local "hot rod" shop that did have the orange which I think I am going to get
this weekend.
The price I got was $150.00 for your reference.

Good luck in your search,

Scott

I've had an Optima Red Top 800D in my '98 GTI-VR6 for almost two years now.
It is does not fit exactly in the OEM battery tray, but it's snug enough. I
think there are instructions in the gti-vr6 list archives (www.gti-vr6.net)
on how to make it fit better.

It works great -- no problems at all. I got mine at my local ATV (Auto Truck
Van) shop. It was $130.

After dealing with a few stores who would rather pass up a sure sale
than work a little (Pep Boys, Murrays, Trak Auto). Here's the 411
on the Optima issue.
  1) The Orange Top is no longer in production.
  2) Reverse terminal Optimas are the model number followed by
an 'R'. So a 34/78 becomes a 34/78R.
  3) The model number Red Top for VWs that require a 'reverse post'
battery is 34R.
  4) The Optima part number for the 34R is 8003-151.

The only location listed, in the email Optima Customer Service sent,
is "any Interstate Battery Dealer could order one". I quoted that
last bit directly. It seems that reverse post batteries are
typically not stocked.

Hope this helps anyone else that is considering an Optima for their
ride.

Why are you using the yellow top? That's a deep-cycle battery for marine
applications or any application that would require a battery to be
significantly discharged. Car batteries don't like to be run way down. I
suppose the yellow top will work but I don't know if it will last as long.

Yellow tops are meant to be stored for long periods of time. They also
aren't meant to discharged slightly and recharged every day. The red
top is an SLI (starting, lighting, ignition) battery and is meant for
these tasks. The marine battery is the blue top.

Per my buddy at Optima:
"The red and orange are what we call SLI batteries (starting, lighting,
ignition). The difference is that the orange is reverse termination b/c
the hook ups are the other way around on some imports. We have
discontinued the orange. It is now a red top with reverse termination.
The yellow top is a deep cycle/starting battery and cost more. It will
turn the engine over and does well when there are excess electrical needs
like big stereos, winches, etc.

We have a new GR 51 coming out very soon (in two weeks). Your best bet is
the Optima red top 35R (reverse termination) which replaced the orange
top."

I have the Red Top in my 98 GTI, and I think all the "reverse post" stuff has been superseded by a new design, with a lip running all the way around the bottom of the battery. IIRC, the lip used to run only
along one side, making clamping it into your tray a hassle.
