Did someone write that there is an after-market window regulator for MKIV's
that doesn't break as often.  I had to replace my driver side regulator and
ever since I did, both windows have been making weird noises or not going up
as smoothly when being used.

Not an aftermarket regulator, but a redesigned OEM part.  It's mostly made of metal with what appears to be a nylon track for the cable.  There are some pics of the part on Vortex.  Search around and you'll find them easily.  They're a hot topic.  :)

I'm actually thinking of "upgrading" to these *before* my current regs break again.

Sure enough the window regulator broke after I wrote my original email.
There is a redesigned window regulator out now as Jason stated.  VW is
issuing them as a repair kit and they go for $60.  Instead of a plastic clip
that rids in the track, it is supposed to be metal clip.  I have called a
couple of VW dealers and these repair kits seem to be on back order.
