In my experience, that is when the same thing happened to me, it was a fuse
under the dash. If that's not the problem, check the fuse slot with a wire
tester to make sure it's getting power. If not, it could be the vacuum
system, which is how the power door locks work. Other than that, I'm not
sure what it would be. Good luck, let me know if I can help any other way.

The power locks on my 1997 VR6 had decided to quit functioning. Using the
switch on the dash or the key does not activate the locks. Could someone
describe the system?

What could be possible gone wrong with the system?

The vacuum pump below the passenger side taillight lens inside the hatch was
the culprit in my car. The pump is located inside the black foam container.

In my case I had a water leak from the rear hatch that eventually got thru
the styrofoam container and shorted out the pump. It was easy to tell, there
was a strong smell of burnt electrical stuff from the pump, I took it apart
for the hell of it and boy did it stink!!

Luckily for me I work at a dealership and stole one out of a used car that we
were wholesaling. I guess that they run near $300.00.

Oh yea, have you tried to put gas in your car yet? I bet your gas door is
shut and you wont be able to open it.

I managed to unlock it by blowing into the hose which feeds air into the
locking mechanism.

I'm a little new to this forum so please bear with me

I recently pucheased my 96 GTI VR6 and this morning when I unlocked
my car I noticed that the power locking system stayed engaged. That
is to say that the motor kept whirring long after the doors had
unlocked. After poking around I found that the noise is coming from
the rear hatch. Also when I'm in the car and I unlock the doors I can
hear a hissing from behind the dash but only when I unlock the doors
there is no hissing when I lock the doors (the motor noise however
happens on unlock and lock)

Has anyone had this problem or know whats going on? Are the locks
vacuum driven?

Thanks in advance
-Noah

Check the twist-off connector between the frame and the door. Sometimes
when the connector is plugged/unplugged, the hose on the inside of the car
will get pushed out of its spot, causing a leak. Our door locks operate on
a "suck and blow" system, i.e. pressure and vacuum. I had this problem when
I had my driver's door realigned - they took the entire door off to make the
adjustments and when they plugged the connector back up the little nipple on
the door end pushed the hose out of its retainer socket. Unfortunately, it
was a somewhat loose fit and I ended up having to use needle nose pliers to
hold the hose inside the car to keep it from getting pushed back out again.
Look up and to the left of the hood release and you should be able to see
the backside of the connector on the driver's side - passenger side should
be similar.

Long story short - you've probably got a broken/misplaced hose somewhere.
Shouldn't be too hard to fix.

Later,

Luke
