Installing a Black Panther (Odyssey) battery in a 1995 GTI VR6

Installing a Black Panther (Odyssey) battery in a 1995 GTI VR6

Here are a few pics showing what I did to mount a Black Panther (now known as Odyssey) battery in my 1995 GTI VR6.

This battery weighs 25 lbs, a whopping 15 lbs. lighter than my stock battery!

Remove the battery then remove the battery tray. The only tricky part here is the cable/wire holder (lower left in this pic). The holder slides on a rail at the bottom of the battery tray, and is locked in place by a catch on its end. See the next pic for how to undo the catch to release the holder.

This pic also shows the holes drilled in the tray & the bolts inserted. I used masking tape to keep the bolts from slipping out. One alternative would be to use two sections of 1/4"x20 threaded rod instead of the bolts, and use one nut above & one nut below the tray to hold the rod in place.

Note also that I position the battery as far to the rear of the tray as possible. This keeps its weight from being too far out towards the front of the car.

All finished.

The "holder" on top is a piece of 1"x1"x1/8" aluminum angle bracket, from Home Depot. I chose aluminum over steel because it's lighter, softer (easier to work with) yet strong enough, plus it looks shiny .

The battery butts up against the lip of the tray on the driver's side. On the passenger side, I take a rubber stopper (also from Home Depot), drill a hole through it, slide the stock battery retaining bolt through it, and bolt it into its stock location. I get a stopper that's slightly too big, and then trim it a bit (with an utility knife; careful!) for a snug fit.
