I too had this problem with my wipers on intermittant mode. I had the
"engineer" look at it. He said it was standard operation, I said
bollocks. I explained what the problem might be and after a further
inspection they said they had found the problem. Guess what, they
repeated what I'd told them. They replaced the wiper relay. The
problem has almost gone away. I'm waiting until my 15K service, when
I'll try a different dealer and see if they can do a better job.
I say take your car to the dealer, get them to fix it. If we keep on
bugging these dealers, one day we might get good service, but more
importantly we may get cars that are perfect when we take ownership of
them!!??

I took my car to the dealer with the same problem. They replaced the
relay, the problem remains. If anybody finds out what the problem is,
let me know, the dealers around here need to be told everything.

As far as the wipers, the service manager said "9 times out of 10" it's
a faulty relay, which he ordered and will replace on Friday. Hope that
does it, although some of you haven't had much luck with that.

I had (passed it to 21-year old daughter) an '86 GTI bought new that
this had the precursor to your problem....on mine, the wipers would
pause..and almost stop, but then go on.
What I think is happening is that whatever provides info to the relay
about where the windshield wiper arms IS in its stroke is either worn
out or out of adjustment...if you think about it, you'll realize that
there's no way that the relay can know WHERE the WS arms are in their
stroke....that info must be provided to it!

Try turning off your wipers and returning them to intermittent mode... More often
than not, the behavior is cleared (and this is also the cheapest solution)...
Not sure exactly why they do this, but it's been a feature for a long time... I
experienced similar behavior on my previous 1986 GTI, and the aforementioned
solution always worked..

dunno about "clearly defective". haven't had any problems on my '97.
However, the front wipers have a tendency to skip cycles in intermittent
mode when first used on a cold morning. I think this is a common problem, as
the dealer replaced the relay three times without a 100% fix.

Hmmm, my '97 has the same issue. It seems to be a problem more when the
windshield is drier - the relay will click, but it shuts off before the wiper
moves much, causing it to move up slightly, but not a complete motion. They
would have to change the relay to extend the on-off cycle long enough, but I
doubt anyone could do that, or that I care... so it really is a case of, "this
problem is NOT worth worrying about..."

now that the cold weather is here, I'm sure many of you are experiencing,
yet again, your wipers skipping cycles when in intermittent mode. My relay
was replaced three times by the dealer, to no avail. Anyway, I recently
installed the prog. relay from Mike Potter. Guess what... no more skipping
cycles. With the car cold (left over night in 40 degree weather), I gave
it a test run recently. I varied the cycles from 1 to 20 seconds.
Everytime the wipers wiped like clockwork. No hesitation.

On top of the programmable relay being a great mod in and of itself, it
also cures the wiper hiccups. On my car anyway....
