Maybe I'm missing something, but I had no problem removing them. After
removing the reflectors/tow-hook covers, the two bolts were easy to unscrew
from the front. The backing nuts have "teeth" which bite into the soft
plastic of the bumper cover, and keep it from spinning. After removing the
two bolts, use a screwdriver to pry the spring-catch thingy out, and the
whole assembly comes out through the front.

I used a 4" srewdriver/ratchet extension on the inside and a socket wrench
w/an extension on the outside (or maybe vice versa). If you think getting it
out is fun, try reinstalling it once part of an oil cooler is in the way.

First off...the foglights...piaa makes ion replacements for them...yellow they
kick ass...55...85 and 100 watt. I have had the 100 watt replacement's in
there for almost a year...and no melting no problems what so ever. next you
dont have to take whole assemble offf...go from the bottom of the car. You
have to remove the covers that shield the engine for dirt and debrise
okay...any questions??? You could also take the whole bumper cover off...it's
only 8 bolts....4 on the top of the cover and 4 on the bottom.make sure you
disconnect the wires to the lights and the fogs

gkoliopoulos,

try this method. It will be easiest if you either remove or loosen the
dummy lens and the turn signal assembly from their normal position. Get
yourself a pair of small opened ended wrenches and hold the back nut
with one of the wrenches ( going through the opening of the dummy lens
and the turn signal lens) while loosening up the front. It take a bit
of time but it can be done.

Hope this helps,

Ok,

you need a combination wrench to hold the nut steady. To get to the nut
with the wrench you have to take both the dummy reflector and the turn
signal off. Put the wrench in through the turn signal opening. Yes its a
tight squeeze, but it'll work.

Good luck.

Dimitri,
You are absolutely right. What a PITA. Guy, you have to be
careful...I can't stress that enough. Those "anchors" or what
ever the hell they are on the inside of the bumper cover are
real hell. They will strip almost instantly...I would take
Dimitr's advice and find a way to get on the inside of the
bumper cover and put a pliers to it or something...once that
anchor becomes dislodged it's all over. I had to cut mine to
remove the foglamp and ended up drilling new holes and putting
new screws/anchors in. This time they will come out without
stripping. Hope this helps, Guy.
Dimitri, sounds like you had a bit more luck than me on this one...

listen to this. You can try a high speed screwdriver or if that doesn't
work, then take the bumper cover off and with a pair of pliers hold the back
and unscrew the front and a lot of patience. Been there done that, what a
shity job to do.

Don't cut the plastic off, take the time nd take the bumper out.

I did it without taking the turn signal off. I simply tied a string to
the center of a small end wrench so I wouldn't lose it into the bumper
and then and stuffed it the small holes behind the reflector. Pull
the string to get the wrench back up close, rotate it around and
get the end over the nut and simply hold it in place with one finger
hooked through the hole, and spin the screw out. Pull the wrench
back out with the string.

You def can just remove the lens on the fog lights. Nate can chime in
on this. On the vortex I guy named cullen sells yellow fog lenses
as well as smoked fog lenses. The 2 screws that are used for aiming
must be removed, and then there are two clips holding it in place if
i'm not mistaking. You def will need to heat up the glass a little
bit to remove the sealant of the lens. As far as getting the fog
lights out, it is pretty simple if you have a really small box wrench,
stick it in through the dummy slot, and grip the nut on the back.
then a regular rachet on the front and it will come out. after you
do it the first time and see how it works, its not problem getting
them in and out. I had a short and used to blow a fuse everytime
I used to turn my fogs on and had them off about 10 times atleast.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Fog light removal-more info?

Alright- After reading through all the posts about fog
light removal I thought I'd give it a try...

I got the two nuts off the two mounting screws- fine.

The two screws however did not back out at all-
there's some kind of sheet metal bit on the back of
the screw that spins round and round as I turn the
screw head... How do I get the screws out/do I need
to? Should I lever on the back of the fog light and
force things a bit?

Also, there's a single torx screw in the same area- is
this used to adjust the aim? Does it too need to be
removed to get those fog lights out or is it only to
adjust?

FYI- I'm just trying to replace a passenger side burnt
out bulb. I was able to do the drivers side by
reaching up behind the light and swapping out the
bulb. The passenger side is too buried to do this
way...

Also, I did see that the cover lenses are removable.
That's cool- my DS lens is smashed and I'll look to
replace. Anybody know where I can get a plain
original one without replacing the whole light? I
wasn't able to find anythreplacementother than whole
replacemint customized kits...

TIA for any light you guys can shed (bad pun intended)
on this issue...

-Mark

Okay, here's what I did to get the screws out: after removing the nuts,
it should be just loose enough that you can fit the tip of a flat-head
screwdriver between the bumper mount and the fog light mount next to
the screw.

Use the screwdriver to apply outward pressure on the foglight mount
while turning the screw. You're not trying to force the screw out,
just use enough pressure to hold the metal sleeve on the back side
against the bumper mount and keep it from spinning.

After the screw backs out enough, there will be too much space to
get any leverage on the fog light mount. At this point, you can just
reach in with needle nose pliers and hold the metal sleeve while you
remove the screw the rest of the way.

vwpartscentral.com carries the replacement lens, i think they run
about $36 each. If you figure out how to remove the lens from the
rest of the foglight, please let me know...

Hope this helps,

Matt
