yes, you pull the DRL relay exactly as describe in the archives. I own a
'97. I pulled the DRL and Foglight relay, and installed the fog light
jumpers.

hey andy.

seems that this drl thing wont die. so you may want
to append this to the bottom of my instructions and we
can hopefully say goodnight to this issue until the a4s
come out.

or you could point them to my page with all the other
mod stuff: http://members.home.net/rgould/stuff/vw/

addendum #1:

bob sent me the following. he had an early 96 build date, and i guess
that there are some differences, so look and see what you see.

turns out it was #94, in the upper right corner, and covered by a piece
of foam.

addendum #2:
i have heard from people with 97 and 98 gti and glx models that
have said that the above rules apply perfectly.

I guess there a couple of different ways to do it. I got this from my
brother who is familiar with electronics and schematics and stuff. He
basically said that you just need to remove the power to the switch in the
relay. I prefer this method rather than desoldering. It only requires
wire cutters. It took longer to remove the plastic under the dash. You
just need to take apart the relay and cut the little copper braided cable
and remove it including the copper plate attached to it. It is pretty
simple, you'll see once you open up the relay. Plug the relay back in and
this disables the DRL's but keeps the parking brake light. I have done this
with my 97 GTI I had, and I just recently did it with my 2000 GLX. I could
take pics, but I would need a fresh 173 relay.

The instructions that I got with my Euro switch from pottermans had me
unplug a yellow wire that comes out of the back of the fuse box to
disable my DRLs, it's like the only yellow wire with a plug abot 6" down
the wire away from the fuse box. I still have relay 173 in and all my
lights function normally.
