Subject: [gti-vr6] Blinker Mods How To (LONG!)

Hey Guys,
Okay, it's done, and it's BADASS! Now my setup is like this:

Front bumper blinker/parking lights are completely disabled.

City light in MKIV look headlights are on with parking lights, and blink
when blinker is on.

Side bumper parking light is now a blinker too.

So, for example, if the parking lights are on, and I turn on the left
blinker, both the side bumper light and the city light blink in harmony. If
the parking lights are off, they still blink in harmony. PERFECT! It's all
thanks to Jeff's suggestion about the resistor. Which, by the way, does get
a little warm, but it only gets warm when the blinker is actually on. I
think you'd have to leave your blinker on for a REALLY long time for it to
get hot enought to do any damage. I left it on for over 10 minutes and it
was still just warm to the touch. Of course, it was only 27 degrees
outside, so that could of had something to do with it. Anyways, WORKED LIKE
A CHARM! So, on to how I did it for those of you that want to try.

To start, you will definitely need the resistor if you want to completely
disable the front bumper blinker/parking lights. If you wanted to keep
those, you could, just ignore the stuff here at the beginning about the
resistor and skip to the next paragraph. The resistor (again thanks to
Jeff) can be obtained at your local Radio Shack under part number 271-120.
It's an 8ohm non-inductive 20 watt resistor. Looks kind of like a long
white brick with a wire coming out of each end. The method I used kept me
from actually modifying any of the wiring behind the front bumper/blinker
light harness. Instead, I completely removed the bulb holder from the
harness and used trimmed down spade connectors to plug into it. Sooooooo,
here's the deal. You need to plug one end of the resistor into the center
of the harness plug. Now, take the other end and a piece of speaker wire
(or something similar) and place them both inside a trimmed down spade
connector. This extra piece of wire gives you a lead to run to the lights
you are going to have blink. Now, plug this end into the flasher lead of
the harness. On the drivers side, it was black with a white stripe.
Unfortunately, I couldn't tell what color it was on the passenger side
because it was so damn dirty, so you'll have to do some testing. Voila,
your done with the hard part.

To make other lights blink, you'll need to take the wire you connected to
the flasher lead of the front bumper blinker and connect it to the BROWN
wire of the new light (As far as I can tell, all the lights have this same
brown wire, even the ones for the city lights in the MKIV look headlights).
Now, I'm no electrical engineering weenie, but I'm 99% positive this is the
negative (-) lead of the light. However, somehow connecting the flasher
lead to this wire, allows the light to be both a parking light AND a
blinker. If you wanted ONLY a blinker, you could connect it to the other
wire going into the light. I think this would make it only blink. Someone
please correct me if I'm wrong. Most of the previous stuff I got from Ryun,
he was a big help with this.

That's it. You're done. Now you'll have the coolest blinkers/parking
lights set up on the block. I have to admit, there was quite a bit of work
involved in this seemingly simple mod, but honestly, it was worth it. I've
always hated those front bumper blinker/parking lights. They're BIG and
UGLY. Now, I have a nice, updated setup like you would find on a new GTI.
Oh, and, I didn't actually drink any beer, but I'd say it was about a 3 beer
job. Unless you're Wally, then it's probably like a half rack + :).
Anyways, let me know if you need help. I'd be glad to give some insight.
And if there is enough interest, I could put up some pics of how it looks
now. Thanks again everyone for all the help. L8R
