==> For my previous GTI ('65, bought new in fall of '85), I
originally spent slightly bigger bucks and got a Bosch set....the
compressor died after 4 years...got a replacement compressor from
JCWhitney(!..tho was Italian)...it lasted just as long. At eight
years, I got a three horn set (Italian, Klaxon brand...though the
blister package wasn't branded, just the hrons themselves) from Auto
Palace which are still going strong at 12 years +
==> From this I assume that (unless others have experience to
contrary...I live in NE, BTW) the weak point is the compressor, that
no matter how fancy the brand it will probably croak and need
replacing, that it doesn't make a lot of difference what brand you
buy, that the going price for a three horn set is around $30-$40.
==> If there's any warranty that's longer than a year and you keep
your cars, SAVE the paperwork...you'll almost certainly want to
collect on it
==> Buy a three horn set....air horns are tuned to a
DISCHORD...and it takes three horns to make one that makes you cringe
as well as be loud.
==> All the sets I've had have had a compressor the size of a juice
can and no reservoir....the horns have been red plastic....but plenty
load
==> When mounting them, don't sweat where you
put them....you'd think they have to be outside to "let the sound get
out", but anywhere in the engine compartment seems to work well enuf.

I have the Hella set (3 horns) installed below my battery. I had to rig up a
mounting bracket using some stuff I had laying around the garage, but
nothing too hard. I could try and snap a few pics, but it's kind of tough to
see because it's between the battery and splash guard. Loud though!

There are some good ones out there for some good coin. Hadley was the brand
name. Dual steel horns with a reserve air tank. There's a gauge on
the tank, along with a Schrader valve. You fill the tank with air & you're
good to go. When you hit the horn button, there's a solenoid that releases
the air pressure, it's instantaneous because there's no compressor that has
to respond first. Loud is not the word for them!!
