Actually, the hatch lights were present for '95, deleted for '96 (my '96
didn't come with one), and were brought back later. I'm not sure if
they're in '97s or not, but I know that they were back by '98 (Sondra's
car did come with one).
As stated elsewhere, it's an easy retrofit (I did it for mine). There
used to be a how-to note with part numbers in Arthur Emerson's old
library, but I'm not sure where that is now. I had a look at
http://catalog.exist.ru, and I *think* (but am not sure) that the part
number for the lamp housing is 1H0-947-113, and the bulb is N-017-725-2.
The parts should cost in the vicinity of $15 or so.
On mine, the wire was tucked behind the carpet inside the hatch by the
left side taillight (as Doug mentioned), and connected into the main
wiring harness at the taillight. It was tied into a small bundle with a
connector on the end. The light should just plug in, and snap into
place under the black plastic piece below the left side rear window. I
can take some photos and send them to you if you'd like.
Good luck,
