for those of you with 96's that still want to get rid of your DRLs..

as others have said in the past, timmons vw in long beach california
is an excellent dealer. they are the ones that sell ALL the
neuspeed stuff, with techs that know exactly how to install it.
and yes, they will ship stuff to you no problem. so no, i wont
get the parts for you. and yes, they had all the needed parts in
stock. phones: 310.595.4601 & 714.821.1301

oh, and if you are looking for a deal on cars, ask for rainer (or
ask for "the german guy"). tell em i sent ya.

so i asked them how to get rid of the drls. unlike the lucky 95s,
the 96 is kinda a pain.

to trick out the whole thing with the euro switch, that lets you
do every combo of fog, parking, lows and highs imaginable, you
will need the following:

1H6941531B 01C the euro switch $49.08
823941817A a bridge $ .96
NSJUMP hi/low jumper $ 4.00

(or at least those were the numbers that i got.)

installing takes about fifteen minutes once you know whats going
on. so read in advance and know what is coming. i guess i must
tell you all that the following is an account of MY experiences.
if your car has fifteen of everything that i tell you to look
for because your car was made on tuesday instead of friday,
dont bug me. this is a FYI only. tho i would be more than
happy to answer any questions about unclear instructions.

it is a three part process:

1. the euro switch. pop off the end piece by the lightswitch with
a screwdriver. reach a finger in and push a little tab at the inside
side/top of the switch. this should free the old switch. pull it
out a little and undo the plug. plug in the euro switch. pop
it back into place and put on the end piece. done.

2. installing the bridge & jumper. this is the scary, but
easy part. look under the knee pad under the steering wheel.
you will find the fuse box "hatch" you can open the door, or
save yourself some time and just remove the whole bottom panel.
after you remove the two screws pull it down slightly and then
pull it out. the back is held in place by being sandwiched in
a clip. no big deal, really. look at the fuse box. look
at either side. you will notice a gray or white little clasp
on either side. pull them forward. this will release the fuse
box. gently lift the box up off its hooks and let it hang down.

more or less, this is what you should see..
                    |------|
                    | 173 |
                    | |
|-----------------------------------|
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | <--some of these are filled
|-----------------------------------| some are not, dont worry
| | | | 110 | | | about them
| | | | | | |
|-----------------------------------|
| | | | | | | | | | | | | <--these are the fuses
|-----------------------------------|
pull the 110 plug. you will see places for the bridge and the jumper.
(i think that the jumper is the thin small one of the two). put in
the jumper into the slot that it belongs (there are a bunch of holes,
and then the obvious one). then put in the bridge. done.

3. the drl plug. this is the whole reason why we had to take off
the bottom and unmount the whole fuse box. this is the pain that
was too far away to reach and take out because it is using damn near
every one of its prongs. pull the 173 plug. it will probably take
some fiddling. get an edge up and then use a flat head screw driver
to pry it all the way out. done.

now lift up the hanging fuse box and put each of its sides on its
hook. slide the gray or white clasps back down over the hooks
to hold the box in place. done.

then slide the far end of the bottom panel into the far sandwich.
then screw in the two screws to attach the front. done.

thats it. boy, even with dealer instructions, i wish someone would
have told me to do it that way. if this all sounds scary and
difficult, DONT WORRY. it sounded that way to me too. i know
so next to nothing about cars it IS scary. it is no big
deal. just take your time, keep track of your parts, and dont
force anything.

of course you can play with all the different combinations of
the 173 and 110 plugs with the jumper and bridge. but to get the
no drls
parking only
fog with parking
low
low with fog
high with low
high with fog
high with low and fog
this is what you have to do. (i might have missed out on some of the
combos.) of course if you get the smoked side turn signals
(TF945071SMK $26.36) it will look really good.

and no, this wasnt taken from any copyrighted book.

be well, go well..

I saw one just this weekend. It was on a black 4 cyl GTI. You can call Cory
at Auto Addictions (Allentown, PA) and ask him about his. The number is
1-800-334-6074. BTW, I asked him how he liked it. He described it as
"annoying." You don't always get honest answers like that :-)

I believe its fairly straight forward on Jettas (I think someone else posted
directions), but alittle trickier on US GTIs, which use brake lights in the
traditional rear fog positions.

>I also want to get rid of the DRL's. Timmons said pulling a relay was all
>that was required. Is this true and which one?

I installed the euro switch on my 98 GTI VR6 to get more control of the
lights, and to get rid of the DRLs. It was a three step process, and
unforunately, since I don't have schematics for the car, so I can't say for
sure what each step is responsible for, but here they are:

1. Install euro switch (this switch does have a separate position for rear
fogs).

2. Remove DRL relay, in third row of relays (highest), its numbered 173 on
my car. Its VW part number is 3A0 941 589 (at least on my 98)

3. Remove relay 110 in first row of relays. Install two jumpers in its
place. At least one of these jumpers is responsible for allowing my low
beams to stay on with my high beams.

I'm not sure if pulling a relay 173 is ALL that is required if all you want
to do is get rid of DRLs. I suspect its not, or at least its not without
giving up something else.

I purchased the parts from Timmons VW. The part numbers and prices are as
follows:
1H6941531B Euro Switch $69.95
823-941-817-A Bridge $1.08
NSJUMP $4.50
Shipping was free.

>2) How long did the Install take and how difficult was it?
>
Actually, it was pretty easy. Maybe 30 minutes or so to install. Removing
the old switch involves removing the plastic piece w/ the ABS light to the
left of the switch, pushing the release slide and pulling out the switch.
Plug in the new one and thats it. Then, remove the lower panel (2 screws I
think) for fuse box access, release the fuse box clips and lower it. Remove
the 110 relay in the first row, and insert the two bridges, then reach up
high for the 173 relay (3A0 941 589 on our cars) and remove it. Put
everything back together and your done!

>3) With the switch installed how many switch positions are there and
>exactly what lights are on/off at each position?

Off: Nothing on, no DRLs
Parking: Parking lights.
Low Beams: Parkings and lows.

When you pull the stalk for the highs, the lows will stay on too. Also, if
the fogs are on, they will stay on with the highs.

Front fogs are turned on by pulling the switch out when its in the parking
or low beam position. Rear fogs (if you wire them) are turned on by pulling
the switch out one further notch.

>4)And finally how do you like this set up and are there any drawbacks?

I haven't found any drawbacks and I really like the change. I wanted to
control the fogs independently of the other lights. I personally don't
normally drive with fogs, except on dark, deer infested roads or in bad
weather. Having the lows on with the highs offers a lighting improvement as
well. I also really wanted to get rid of the DRLs. I feel that having the
headlights on in the daytime is sometimes appropriate in certain traffic
and/or weather conditions, but I want to decide MYSELF when to turn on the
lights.

> Okay, ah, I guess that's more than a few questions but any help
>would be welcome!

Sure, anytime! Email with more questions or whatever. As I said, I'm very
happy with the change.

This is to clarify what I've found on my '98 GLX. The Euro Switch DOES NOT
allow both the low and high beams to be on at the same time. I think this is
because the GLX probably uses one dual filament bulb versus the GTI uses two
single filament bulbs. Each bulb on the GTI can handle the heat of the bulb.
On the other hand, the dual filament bulb probably cannot handle both
filaments to burn at the same time. Let me know if you agree.

Mike,

the pin number off of the Euro switch for the rear foglights is 12. As
far as the connectors goes try Mike Potter at (714) 663-2434 or Timmons
VW (in European Car).

Hope this helps,

P.S. I'm not positive but I thought that rear foglights weren't
available on the GTi's.
