Hella has come out with "Golf 4 style" headlights that are a direct
replacement fit in a Euro Golf 3 !!!!

The above pic now here. aqn.
I just ordered a set from Germany. Yes, I know, a "direct replacement" for a Euro Golf is not a direct replacement for our "Hecho en Mexico" cars. But I am bound and determined to find a way to make this work. It is my intention to come up with an installation kit. Unlike the "real" Golf-4 headlights, these should not require a new grill or "fillers". The retail price of these lights in Germany is about $315.00/set at today's exchange rate. This does not include shipping or import duties. I am looking into quantity pricing. How many of you guys would be interested in a "group purchase" for a "kit" of these lights? I'm hoping that in some quantity, it can be made to happen (complete mechanical and electrical kit) for under $400. E-mail me privately if you are seriously interested. Seriously interested means that you'd be willing to put up a deposit of at least $100 to make this happen (refundable if it doesn't). -Uwe-

Strictly Foreign has had these kit availble for about 2-3 months now. They
come with a custom grill to fill the gaps. Personally i do not like the look
but this is my opinion.

No, Strictly Foreign does not have these. What Strictly Foreign sells is a
kit to put *real* Golf-4 lights in our cars.

These lights (here's a close-up)

are brand new, just introduced in Europe, strictly an aftermarket light, that installs as a *direct replacement* (absolutely no mods required) in a (euro) Golf-3. That's the beauty of these. Because they are made specifically as a retrofit to the Golf-3, they will not leave any gap to be filled! They will however, require some mods to get them mounted and some wiring harness adaptation... -Uwe-

This remains to be seen. For one thing, the older Hella dual-rounds don't
have built in fogs (which I'm 98% sure these do). Remember that other
lights intended for the Euro Golf-3 (like the Projekt Zwo, Abt, or even the
"stock" Euro lamps) don't fit in our "Hecho en Mexico" cars quite as easily
as the Hella dual-rounds.

Like I said, I've ordered a set. As soon as they arrive, I will have a
look and see what it will take. I will only ask for deposits on a group
purchase when I've got it all figured out and have quantity pricing info.
But I still need to know how many people are seriously interested...

They use Hella "Free Form" reflector technology, but I'm 99.9% sure that
they use "regular" (halogen) Euro bulbs (H1 ?) They are certainly not HID
lamps (that technology is *way* expensive). I will post a translation of
the "brochure", hopefully later today...

There isn't much to be learned from the brochure--almost all of the text is
promotional, "More light, improved safety, and a modern appearance"
basically. There's also a general description of FF-Technik which talks
about the small size and high performance of the units, the even dispersion
of the main beam and the far-reaching high beam. The integrated fog lights
are designed to minimize returning glare. There are city lights. Optical
components are laser-cut.

Hella FF/DE headlights work really, really well. I'd buy these if I had a
Golf.

If anyone cares, I have now have the installation instructions.
Of course, these are for European cars, ours will be somewhat different.

* The bulbs are said to be H7's and are included. - Anyone know if H7's are generally available on this side of the pond? * Integral fog lights. * Unlike the real Golf-IV, they do not have integral turn signals. * They do have a fourth light position that's said to be a "standing" (marker) light. -Uwe-

Brendan,
It's just a dummy reflector. There's no fog on the mkIV style lights for
mk3's. And actually the small light above it is a city light, and comes
with a white bulb. The ones you've seen with amber are those that have been
replaced with an amber bulb.
Here's mine:
http://cchar.freeservers.com/my_1998_gti-vr6.htm

Here's a silver arrow gti with the mkIV's and a kamei grille:
http://cchar.freeservers.com/jason's_1998_gti-vr6.htm

And here's a red gti with kamei grille and eyelids:
http://cchar.freeservers.com/marcus'_19.htm

The mkIV style lights became the "in" thing after the dual round light craze
died down. Now it looks like a lot of people are going with "E-code"
headlights. They're what the golfs and jetta's get stock in europe. Much
better light output than our stock lights, but not as good as the Hella dual
rounds.
