Well, I said I'd find a way to turn the DRLs on or off at will
with euroswitch and without DRL relay and so on.
And so I have.
I looked at relay 173 and found that its resting (relay off)
position is where it sits when the DRLs are on. Only when
you pull the hand brake does it trigger the relay on, which switches
the DRLs off. That would mean that if I wanted to keep
the relay and turn the DRLs off for any length of time I'd have
to turn the relay on and leave it on.
I didn't like that idea, so to make a long story short, I
simply put a couple 14 gauge wires and a 20 amp switch in
it's place. I put the switch just to the right of the
central locking rocker in the little flat removable cover
there. Getting the wires up there is quite easy. (push it
down through the opening from the front until it pops out by
the passenger foot well, and then push it straight across to
the driver side). The switch is a totally black rocker with
the same rough black finish as the cover I cut a hole in.
Very clean looking.
Here's what the relay slots look like in bad ascii art:

And this is what's plugged into it now.

Also, here are a couple of pics of the relays panel & the wiring
for the above mod:
I used standard plastic covered, 14 gauge crimp on spade connectors at
relay end and crimp on female disconnects at the switch. 14 gauge
wire connects them. Anything bigger is a waste because the headlight
wires themselves are 14 gauge or smaller.
So with this switch, the euroswitch, bridge and jumper in fog light
relay position here are my options.
dark (with car running)
80% DRLs only
running lights only
running + fogs
running + 80% DRLs
running + 80% DRLs + fogs
running + low
running + low + fogs
running + low + high
running + low + high + fogs
The only options I don't have are to run
fogs without running lights and highs without lows
And in case you're wondering, the DRLs still turn off normally when
the ignition is switched off, even with the DRL switch on. There is
also no harm in leaving the DRL switch on with lows, as that is
how the relay works as well. Oh, and no the hand brake will no
longer turn the DRLs off.
