How to remove door panel

How to remove door panel

[ 18 June 2002 ]

NOTE: the pieces in these diagrams are from the passenger side door of a 1995 GTI VR6. The orientation of the clips in the following diagrams shows you which side of the clip its barb is on. The clips are actually perpendicular to the diagram i.e. sticking straight "into" the monitor.
[ diagram of door handle pull ] Using a large (is there any other size? ) flat blade screwdriver, pry off the door handle pull cover (left).
Unplug the power window switch.

[ diagram of door latch pull
Pry off trim piece around the door latch pull.
Unscrew the two large Phillips head screws.

Unscrew the zillion of little Allen head screws around the edge of the door panel. (I don't know the size of those screws, but if you buy one of those "sets" of little Allen wrenches, one is bound to fit.) The Allen screws screw into two-part clips around the edge of the door. The door side part of the clip goes into, well, the door. The second part of the clip slides/snaps onto the first part and accepts the Allen screws.

The vapor barrier is caught under the door-side part of the clips. Using an Exacto knife or razor blade, cut the vapor barrier around the clips so you can peel the barrier off w/o having to remove the door-side part of the clips. Be careful & slow when pulling off the vapor barrier and keep it clean, so you can re-use it. I have removed & re-applied my vapor barrier four times now and it still sticks very well when re-applied.

Unscrew the door lock knob.

Pull the bottom of the door panel out and lift it up & out to remove. You will need to unplug the following connectors first:
  • power mirror & power mirror switch
  • speaker
  • power window switch
  • alarm/lock knob
