Kraig,

Not much. However, too much to use on headlights, if that's what you were
thinking. It doeasn't block the "fogs" at all, 'cause I didn't paint over
the "cricles" in the middle. As for the turning signals, they look good, &
you can see 'em. Remember, this ain't any-old black paint. It's
translucent, and it's applied in many light coats.

I was feeling ambitious today. I sprayed some Nightshade on my front
blinker lenses and the lenses next to them, the side markers, and
lightly on the rear brake light (collision light). That brake light
just stands out too much for my tastes when looking at the car. It
blends in with the spoiler better now. The front end really looks
transformed, too. I love it! I had a lot left so I sprayed some things
on the 92 also, and still have a lot of the stuff left. Hmm...what
next...the cat? :-)

Subject: [gti-vr6] Nite Shades and more light tinting goodies....

Gosh, I'm getting better at this tinting thing. :)

After the Nite Shades tint on one of turn signals started flaking
yesterday, I decided to yank the turns and dummy panels, strip the old tint
off them, clean and sandpaper [something I neglected to do before], and
spray them again. But I had run out of Nite Shades. I did not want to wait
for more NS, so I went out to the local Parts America and picked up
something else.

This stuff is better than Nite Shades, imho. It's called Trimbrite Spray
Window Film. The color I used was Smoke/Ford Black which is pretty much the
same as the Nite Shades color. It's both cheaper and easier to find than
NS, and works better than NS. Here are some observations:

1. On an unprepped surface, NS went on kind of "cloudy". It was translucent
instead of transparent. This cut down on light output. On my prepped
[sanded with fine sandpaper to the point it was no longer transparent] turn
signals, the Trimbrite stuff actually made the sanded surface transparent
again! Before, with NS, I could not see the reflector pattern behind the
light cover. With Trimbrite, I can still see the reflector pattern.

2. NS left a matte finish on the unprepped surface. On the prepped surface,
Trimbrite turned the matte [after sandpaper] surface slightly glossy. This
looks much better.

Note: Notice that I did not prep the surface when I sprayed the first time
with NS. For all I know, I might get the same results if I had prepped the
surface before using NS the first time. Maybe someone else can comment on
this. Whatever the case, I highly suggest that you put fine sandpaper to
the surface before spraying.

3. This stuff is harder to use than NS. NS dries a lot faster and you don't
have to wait as long between coats. Trimbrite takes longer to dry. But
because of that, it is also easier to blend spots of paint on the surface.

4. I can't comment yet on whether Trimbrite is more durable than NS. Catch
me in a couple of weeks. :)

5. I also found out that the dummy panels hold the NS tint pretty well.
When I tried to tape the NS off, it wouldn't come off. The NS tint taped
off [using shipping tape or something stickier] easily - albeit slowly -
from my turn signals. I have heard that smooth glass surfaces are even
worse at holding onto NS tint. I didn't tint my fogs so I can't comment on
that.

Good luck. Email me if you have any other questions.

Hey everybody, just wanted to let you in on a little secret. I just
finished tinting a set of Golf GL tail lights to get the half black/half
red look instead of the whole tint of stock. In searching for the right
spray to use, I came across Testors Model Masters Transparent Black
Window Tint(product #2949). It looks so good you could not tell the diff
between Hella's and mine! The best part is it's widely available at
hobby stores and only cost $3.50 a can. Finish is gloss, no need to sand
the surface beforehand either. Great stuff. I goota do my side markers
now!

Later,
Anthony
