Not much chatter on the List, so I thought I'd make an only slightly less than random contribution.
The hood struts on my 98 GTI started biting the dust (wouldn only just support the weight of the hood), so
I set about checking the Library and buying me some replacements. I went to AutoZone first with my
Library-supplied part number in hand, but no dice, no such part number. Okay, no big deal, I know they
come from an 82-88 Supra, so I tell the, um, human working behind the counter to look that up for me.
Nope, not available, sorry. As I'm walking to my car in mild disgust he comes running outside after me, "Sir! Sir! I'm sorry, I was looking for the wrong part number. Come on back, I'll look for the right
number." Okay, sez I, so I come stand at the counter for another 5 minutes while he looks. Back he comes: "Sorry, we don't have that part number, either." It totally figures. Like a bad Stooges imitation.
So, I head over to Advance to see if they can help me. Okay, they have the part in their computer, but
their warehouse has only one in stock, and--get this--they can't order another one. Hunh? Can't order any?
Why not? They just can't, that's all.
Okay, so I get on the net, like I should have done in the first place. Cutting (more or less) to the
chase, I find out that almost all on-line auto parts places are wanting $44.67 *per strut*! Holy crap!
Except for one place, that is: Autohaus Arizona. They're asking only $23.39 per strut, so I ordered two from them. (Anyone else who needs these hood struts, go to http://www.autohausaz.com and search for part
number SG 329001.)
The two struts came a couple of days ago, I put 'em in yesterday, and now my hood stays up like Peter
North on Viagra.
Sorry for that.
And Andy, do you maybe wanna add this to the Library, since the P/Ns in the most recent posts from there
were no longer valid at AutoZone or Advance? Just an idea, for closure's sake.
