I stupidly used some el cheapo double-sided tape. If you look in the
library, there are references to some ultra-strong 3M stuff that's supposed
to be able to replace spot welds, etc. Maybe I'll have to find some of that.

Mine just fell off the day before the VW Sport show. I went to Trak auto
and got some of the 3M side moulding double-sided tape. It comes in a
little pack and the tape has a red backing.

Make sure you clean the old moulding goo off very well, otherwise it won't
adhere properly. One of the little packs that Trak sells is also not
enough to cover the whole length of the door moulding so get two packs.

I just used a couple of smaller strips on mine since I have the euro fender
flares and I plan on adding the euro side mouldings as well. It's been a
week with varying temperatures and it seems to be on pretty solid so far.

Dave, you can have my moulding piece when I replace it with the euro pieces
in a couple of weeks. My car is black and I'm in Washington DC. Just let
me know if you're interested.

I just went through this about a month ago. One real big problem I
encountered was trying to remove the old double sided tape from the
molding. I tried a razor, paint scraper and various thin screwdrivers
and prying devices but to no avail. If anyone has a tried method please
do share.
As for the 3M tape per the library, it was a b!tch to find (as in I
couldn't) but I found some other 'strong bond' stuff. However, since I
couldn't get the original tape off I tried to apply the new stuff to the
center portion (which as you know does not contact the door) and my
molding is ready to fall back off once again.

I used an exacto knive and basically just shaved the tape down as low as I
could to the moulding. Then I applied a lot of bug and tar remover and got
the rest off with an old towel. It took a fair amount of time, patience
and elbow grease, but eventually it all came off pretty clean. I finished
the prep with some rubbing alcohol as per the directions on the 3M package,
let it dry completely and applied the tape.

Also remember to clean the contact points on the door thoroughly. I had a
fair amount of the tape stuck to the door.

Hope this helps.

easy way to remove old crappy double sided tape:

items needed: Goo Gone (adhesive remover), and a plastic scraper (like what
you apply bondo with)

Instructions:
lay molding down tape side up
SATURATE the adhesive with the Goo Gone.
Let sit for about 15 minutes. (make sure Goo Gone does not sit on painted
side for extended periods)
use scraper and try to work up the old tape. Generously use more goo gone
while working the tape up.

It takes alot of elbow grease, and about 30 minutes. (per molding)
If there is a better way, let me know!!

All,

I've responded to Dave privately, but my experience
with door molding corresponds to most other folks'
experiences...

Removing the old tape from molding:
Use of Goo Gone and other type of gels/lubes/etc.,
I did not use... Basically, I used sandpaper and
a putty knife along with a huge common screwdriver
that I could use to get some leverage... I laid
the molding down, tape side up, and worked like a
dog for a long time to get it as clean as possible...
[Read: it sucks!]

The *trick* that I found out after 2-3 times of trying
to get the d*mn stuff to stick was using a metal/paint
cleaner to thoroughly clean the area *ON THE DOOR* where
the tape adheres to... Not only is it important to get
the tape to stick to the molding piece, but it's also
equally important to get the door surface area clean as
a whistle to ensure good contact and adhesion...

Richard: although the Euro stuff sounds good, in order
for it to look "right", you have to purchase all the parts...
I spent a lot of time on the phone with Potterman talking
about what all is involved, and I made the decision that
(a) it was too expensive for my budget and (b) you have
to buy the whole Euro kit--door moldings *AND* the wheel
well plastic covers... It's truly unfortunate (and
one of my pet peeves) that the stock molding doesn't
come with clips...

Also, whoever wrote in and said they paid $90 for the
molding--where?!? I picked up my piece at Timmons
for (I believe) $25 or so... It was pre-painted to
the color of my car... Just make sure they're fully
aware of which side piece you need--they sent me the
driver's side when I actually needed the passenger's
side...

Mark

Hey Kids,

Just a few post-operation notes from Uncle Wally here.

Did the moulding replacement thingy on Monday (great weather, came home
early, had a beer,.....ahhhhhh). Anywho, got that great 3M tape as
recommended here. Biggest battle was getting the remaining tape-crap off of
the moulding piece itself. Damn. Lots of elbow grease, additional beers, and
an x-acto knife. Oh, and plenty of Goo Gone!

Put the tape on the car first (mistake, see below), peeled the backing off,
then applied the moulding with the help of my trusty bro Jim. Stood back to
look......DOH! The white tape showed on various and sundry parts of the
moulding. When I get a minute (Sat.?), I have to break out the trusty x-acto
knife again and do some surgery.

Lesson: apply the tape to the moulding first, then apply the moulding to the
car body. Better match up of tape alignment that way. Unless, you get black
(my car color) or clear tape. Either way, if you're a perfectionist, do it
the first way.

Signing off for now. Carry on.

Dudes,

Just got my new moulding (with the backing tape) from Timmins VW for $35
including shipping! Cool. Tell you what, if I knew that before, I just
woulda ordered the new one and said the hell with that
buying-new-tape-scraping-the-old-crap-off stuff. Hell wit dat!

Anyhoo, now I gotta spend another hour getting the remnants of the 3M
backing tape off the car. Arrrgh. Sometimes the more expensive solution is
best! Especially when time is the premium.

I used superglue for plastic and metal (5$), and it holded for a year
(winter included), then the car got stolen, but I presume it`s still
holding.

I am re-affixing the passenger side moulding on my '96 GTI VR6 this week,
and searching the library, I found everyone had a problem with removing the
old tape crud.

I used a very hot hair dryer and my thumb, heating up a 8-10" area at a time
and rubbing the tape off slowly. Worked faster and cleaner than X-Acto
knives. It's easiest of course if the old tape was still affixed to the
moulding and not the door (as it probably is).

Now I just need to find the new 3M 4390 stuff.

I have also had good luck with rubbing alcohol in the past with the
side molding tape crud on my '97 GTI VR6. I'll have to try the hair
dryer trick next time (without the rubbing alcohol!).
